I have just finished writing a theory on why a French Revolution would have, in fact, happened, in the aftermath of Beauty and the Beast. Here is a short preview:"As I, and many other viewers of Disney, have realized that Beauty and the Beast takes place during a time period when France should have been in the throws of a Revolution, or would be soon after the film. This was the 1780’s. In our world, Marie Antoinette, her husband King Louis-Auguste XVI of France, and the rest of the French aristocracy, were overthrown, most by use of the guillotine. The financial strain of servicing old debt and the excesses of the current royal court caused dissatisfaction with the monarchy, contributed to national unrest, and culminated in the French Revolution of 1789."
