I'm no expert for spiders, but I'd guess it's some kind of nephila ("golden silk orb-weaver").
They are that large, weave impressive webs and are native to Thailand. You'll just have to find the species with matching colors...
Oh, nice shot btw.

Rabenkraehe In reply to ninazdesign [2007-11-02 12:47:40 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, you found your species. Somehow my second comment got swallowed by dA the first time, so let's try it again.
Some additional information I forgot to include and which seems to be missing from the (interesting!) article you linked, too:
Every other comment asks about the poison. I'm glad to inform you that despite their impressive size the poison of those spiders is completely harmless to humans (Actually, their pincers have trouble just to pierce human skin).
Those spiders are quite popular pets. Contrary to other spiders they usually repair their web instead of consuming it and weaving a new one. So if you have a place at a window where spider and human don't disturb each other you can settle it there and it will stay put.
Our zoological-botanical garden keeps a few of them along the paths through the greenhouses. Quite interesting to watch the people discovering them (Our's are black with orange joints.)

THANKS it is so interesting to read

Rabenkraehe In reply to ninazdesign [2007-11-06 19:49:31 +0000 UTC]

My pleasure! Actually I just have that urge to teach if I feel I'm able to - if my audience likes it or not. Glad you like it...
Now, first an amendment to my last post: Reading it again I get the feeling I might have pictured nephila too harmless. They should be quite capable to bite a human if you really insisted However, I never found a source saying "My nephila bit me!". The wording always is "It is said to feel like being stung by a wasp." Go figure...
Then: I'm really no expert for spiders in general. But when I encountered the semi-free one in our zoo I somehow became quite interested specifically in nephila (wonder why...) I'm by no means arachnophobic, but as you know up close and personal they are quite impressive Btw, that's her (She's christened "Sonja"): [link] If someone wants a closer look, just ask. You can judge her size compared to the bougainvillea on the left (same distance).
My knowledge about them is 100% pure Google.
I live in Stuttgart, the centre of the Wild South of Germany. (If you put the coordinates displayed on my dA page under "Current Residence" into Google Earth it will land you within a few meters from my position right now...) Our "Wilhelma" [link] is said to be the only "zoological-botanical garden" (as opposed to "zoo") in Europe. I'm a quite frequent visitor there.
One story I encountered while researching nephila (Don't read on if spiders give you shivers. Don't click the link if additionally you can read German): [link]
Someone who for quite some time always kept one of those spiders in his room once had the problem that his newest roommate had put it's web half in front of a bookshelf. To get at some of his books he had to reach around the web, the spider inches from his nose.
One day he accidently dropped his LOTR into the web. The spider survived, though confused, the web was a complete loss.
When he awoke the next morning and sat up in his bed his face encountered a soft but strong resistance... He describes the seconds till he found the lightswitch as "quite creepy".
The shocked spider had filled the room with criss-crossing strands and was dangling 40 cm from his nose...

wow, this is a lot of perfect information dear, THANK you, its so darn interesting all you write, is the spider in the window in your house

I do not read German though, too bad

That story was sure creepy, but I suppose it was ok with him, since he did have it in hes house as a pet

They make huge webs, i have taken a very bad picture of it but I will upload it for you to see if you want The spider in this web is 3 times bigger then this picture ...eeeeek :it was hanging high on a house in Thailand ...

Thanks again, if you have more picture you find on Google please send me links, this is so fun

Rabenkraehe In reply to ninazdesign [2007-11-08 22:03:13 +0000 UTC]

Ooops, seems I should word my comments more clearly. No, the depicted nephila - "Sonja" - is a celebrity at our local zoo, the "Wilhelma". While I don't fear spiders, I'm not really attracted to them, either. Besides, if I were to keep a pet with eight legs I'd opt for something fluffy like (Warning, seriously large spider ahead!) [link] (Though my interest in them is more as a model for photos. I once saw an impressive b&w picture of one of them rearing on it's four hind legs, the front four legs spread wide, photographed from a low angle and with the caption underneath: "Come on punk, make my day!" )

I only now realize that a lot of information on keeping nephila as a pet available on the web is written in German. Interesting... However, giving the link to the original German story is more the scientist in me, always documenting the source of his quotations While it's longer and more elaborate than my summary I think you got the interesting point And yes, the guy who wrote it is still fond of spiders.
