well, first of all: thanks for the compliment!
as for your question. it's canon fact. people started making out everyone's ages from CoS, where the trio went to Nearly Headless Nick's 500. deathdayparty.... and he died in 1492, hence making year two take place in 1992. So, everyone thought (almost correctly), that Ron, Harry and Hermione were born on March 1st, July 31st and September 19th in 1980. However, people soon noticed that that wouldn't work out, seeing as you have to be 11 upon entering Hogwarts, and Hermione would've still needed another two weeks in 1991 to cross the age line. JK then clarified on here webpage (after a bit of back-and forth discussion and different statements) that Hermione was in fact born in 1979, making her the eldest of the three....
phew, there you go, a bit of "important" Potterverse history scary how much I know of stuff like that, really....
