The kanji for Japan is 日本.
It means "origin of the sun".
This is why the country is know as the land of the rising sun, and why they have a red sun on their flag. Add the kanji for language, and you have the word japanese: 日本語.
As for 団, it is a kanji without kun'yomi (訓読み) which is the japanese reading. It means group, but when a prefix is added, it changes. 水団, for example, is composed of the kanji for water, read as mizu, and the dan kanji. But when together like this, it is read by its on'yomi (though that's not always the case)(音読み): suiton, basically meaning water element.
