Description
This is a formidable cousin of the mermaids, called the Angler Maid. They live in the deep ocean and have a phosphorescent orb, woven into their hair to attract prey. It is not known whether the Angler Maids create this glowing orb biologically or it is crafted.
Little is known about the creatures due to their deep sea habitat. Unlike their shallow water dwelling cousins, they do not need to appear attractive to the human species and so have adapted to living in the twilight. Most humanoid features remain aside from larger eyes to better absorb light, the very obvious and deadly teeth and a more skeletal frame.
The pale, almost translucent skin allows the Angler Maid to appear invisible from below, much like the camouflage of a shark. Much like the Mermaid, these creatures are very vain, although in the poor light of the deep sea and being lone hunters there is no social grooming and their hair is crafted into a dreadlock-like state using fish oils to condition. Jewelry is crafted from the remains of their prey and squid ink is often used for tribal tattoos. It is thought the purpose of these tattoos is to intimidate other Angler Maids, as they are fiercely territorial and it is not unusual for chance meetings to result in violence.
