I prefer a mouse to the touch pad on my MacBook. I had to get a mouse, because that other thing drives me bonkers. And when you have sweaty fingers like mine, they don't slide over it. It isn't such a big deal with sticky fingers on a mouse. I know a lot of artists have used tablet PCs over the years, but they're not something I have any interest in using really. I don't even know how well they'd work with the programs I use anyhow.

I use both... for drawing and painting I use the tablet/stylus and for technical stuff like SketchUp or web designing I use the mouse because the mouse allows more control over stuff when you do technical drawing!
