hey, great composition!

i'm mainly a fractal artist and damn, i love 3d abstractism but i don't know where to begin..

what do you suggest me? there is some good 3d free software just as a starting point?
or only commercial soft (c4d, 3dsmax, bryce) are the only valuable choices?
