Blurs California emptiness
That hangs over everything.
We look into the past of this land
Somewhere in the hills
Lost between the long narrow swale
And the valley of the water King
The land swallows every human act.
The ridges of its broken back
Lifting themselves to western skies
Sometimes shaking complacency as they rise
Convection's breath stirs turgid heat
And grass and ghosts
Towards the blueness
Into atmosphere that reaches out

Of the obdurate humbling range
