Description I’m generally more of a Marvel-guy than a DC-guy, but you have to admit that Batman has some of the most intriguing villains of just about any superhero out there. This here is my tribute to one of the most conflicted villains of them all, Two-Face.

For those unfamiliar with the character, Two-Face is the result of the fractured psyche of attorney Harvey Dent, two sides of the same man fighting for control of one body. Years of childhood abuse caused him to develop a much darker side of his normally kind and just personality and the barrier between those two sides was broken when a mob boss destroyed half of his face with a vile of acid. The dark and cruel side of Harvey now unleashed, the criminal Two-Face was born, a polar opposite to everything the noble Harvey Dent once stood for. (Now that’s some cool shit right there!)

With Two-Face there is no right, and there is no wrong… there is only the coin. Every major decision that Two-Face makes is decided by the flip of his two-headed coin (one side of which is scarred just like him). If it lands pristine side up, then mercy is shown; if it lands scarred side up, then… he’s not so nice...

I pretty much tried to steer clear of the Tommy Lee Jones “Batman Forever” version of the character and stuck with a more old-school classic gangster vibe. And I thought keeping the entire picture rendered in black and white suited both that old-gangster-era vision and the character as well. One side of him is very sleek and handsome while the other side is just as polished, but entirely twisted and evil. I also tried to blur the line a bit in his face as to where one side starts and where the other one finishes as I thought it added some mystery and a touch more reality.

So in this picture he’s got the drop on Batman, and the flip of the coin will decide the Bat’s fate. I tried to get a little artsy and divide the composition in half without actually cutting it straight down the middle. So to that end, I’ve got Batman’s cape going diagonally one way and Harvey’s shadow continuing that motion in the bottom half of the piece. That also gave me a nice dark background to contrast the white side of Harvey’s suit and to help silhouette the coin. Ohhhh, check me out! I’m being all artsy!!!

Desktop version for your computer can be found here [link]

99% Acrylic paint on illustration board with only the highlight and the motion blur on the coin done in Photoshop.

I love the perspective on this. You can almost feel the Fates themselves staring at that coin, waiting to see what the answer will be.

It makes me realize what a gianormous way I have to go. A lot of my things look so very flat. On the other hand, I've only been on DA a year and can see improvement, so for me its onward Crystalized Soldier, or something.

We're all trying to get better and faster and disliking our work is all part of the growth process. I get about 2 good weeks of enjoying a finished piece before the mistakes I've made really start to jump out at me. And then that's all I see... what I did wrong. I just tell myself that I'll fix it on the next one.

Cheers to dA for helping us all improve

This is so god damned amazing. I honestly have no clue how you manage to get so much detail all with paint. The closest I could come to such is with charcoal, and that's if I get lucky with what little skill I have.

Batman is the main mutha. This is wonderful. I have been looking at this for a bit, who did you model ole Harvey after?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to ThorStrongStone [2006-06-21 00:43:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I really didn't model him after anyone in particular. I just wanted him to look handsome and chiseled with some character in his face. I had to paint it twice before I was happy with it. I did model the woman in the coin after my girlfriend though.

Love Two-Face, love Batman, love this picture.
I especially enjoy the look on Two-Face because it seems like he really doesn't want to shoot, but will if the coin says so. And the perspective is fantastic, as well as all the little details in the coin and suit. Awesome job!

Thanks. Good call on the analysis too. I tried to make it seem as the the left (evil side) of his body wanted to shoot, and the right side was compelled to abide by the coin toss. I'm glad that all came across.

Wow, though! I really am blown away. xD; Absolutely stunning piece of work! One of the best batman fanarts I've seen. <3333

jesus christ, you did that in acrylics? i figured from the coin that it was a photoshop and i was still awed by it, and then i saw it was traditional and my jaw dropped, and then i found it was acrylics and i was just blown away. i think its very well laid out, composition wise, and stylistically, the black and white really does suit it. but acrylics! how big is the canvas?? You're a lucky bum to be able to use possibly one of the cheapest art products out there so ridiculously well!

Thank you! Acrylics really are the way to go in my opinion if you're still going to stick with traditional media these days. There's not a damn thing that they can't do and they're quick and easy to clean up, which is very important for lazy bastards like me!

i really ought to try to work with them....i usually prefer oils because they blend so dang well, but ive seen people, close friends even, who can do marvelous things with acrylics...hmmm.... thanks for the response!

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to hopelessshade [2006-04-21 17:20:13 +0000 UTC]

Liquitex makes a slow-dry extender medium that you can buy to make acrylics behave more like oil paint. Instead of mixing the acrylics with water, you can use this stuff and it really extends the drying time of the paint for an extra 30 minutes or so. So you can still blend wet into wet just like oils.

...it's almost scary how talented you are, you know? The forced perspective on this and the coin alone would have been worth wondering at, but the composition and detail in the piece as a whole astound me! Do you use photo references like Alex Ross or is it purely from your brain onto the page?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to vladimirsangel [2006-04-09 05:34:30 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!!!

As far as using reference, I absolutely do. I don't quite have the resources that Alex Ross does, so it's not like I can get someone to actually put on a Superman-suit and take pictures of him.

So for this piece I placed a couple of G.I. Joe figures in these poses and figured out where I wanted my camera angled. I took a few reference photos of that, then I laid on the floor and placed the camera on a high shelf to snap some photos of myself for use as reference for Batman. For Two-Face I just held the camera above my head and took some photos of myself that way. It's a very simple and unrefined process I got going on here, but it works for me. I've got a pretty good handle on the human form so it's not too hard for me to smash all that info together and make a decent drawing out of it.

I actually put a good amount of work into the coin because I used it as an opportunity to paint a portrait of my girlfriend. So I actually designed and drew the coin as you would normally see it straight on, and then using photoshop I changed the perspective. That way I knew it would still look like my girlfriend without me having to work too hard to get the angles right. I printed out the new coin and then painted it into my painting.

I hope that helps you some,a dn thank you so much for checking out my stuff!
