Not really pertaining to your painting, so I apologize. Just like to voice a random opinion :]
I highly disagree that using layers and brushes and such is a crutch and 'relying on the program'. If you apply the same logic to painting in oils on a canvas thats saying doing all your various levels of under paintings and using physically real different brushes is a crutch. We should all just use opaque acrylics and never blend them or thin them and make blocky abstract art; doing anything else would be making a crutch of our medium.
You can argue that the great masters didn't get to use the flexibility of a computer program, so thus the more 'natural' and 'pro' way to digitally paint would be without using the benefits of your medium. I find that incredibly ridiculous. You can be damn sure that if Michelangelo or Titian came to our time and had PS he would abuse the shit out of all the features to make art how they wanted. If you are painting digitally and you want to paint an image, then paint it using the tools of that medium to what degree you wish. If you think those tools are a crutch, then actually do traditional, grab some real paint and a canvas and be sure not to use too many brushes, and stop reaping the benefits of a medium in the form of ease of use and accessibility while simultaneously bashing those features.
Theres an extent to where yes, trying to keep it minimal to streamline a process is wonderful, or just if you like to do it that way; but don't outright bash others using YOUR MEDIUM to it's full potential. Calling any one part of the medium a crutch calls everything about it a crutch. Because it's all the same thing.
Anyway, not really directed at you, but I think it needed to be said somewhere.

And the big skeletal head in the background on the left is my favorite part. Bones are so awesome.
