Description Dissociative identity disorder, previously called multiple personality disorder, is a disorder that is usually a reaction to trauma as a way to help a person avoid bad memories. DID is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality states.

Each separate identity may have a unique name, personal history, age, and other characteristics. The presence of dissociative identity disorder isn’t always obvious, either to onlookers or even to people who suffer from the condition themselves. In the beginning, people with DID may simply be aware of lapses in memory.

About 90 percent of DID cases studied in the United States, Canada, and Europe involve a history of abuse. Moreover, accidents, natural disasters, and military combat can also create trauma severe enough to be a risk factor for dissociative symptoms and DID.
