I hate the word shading - it's something you learn. If light comes from here, I shade there. I think that is wrong. You have to comprehend the object and the shape. Then you think hard about the light and where it's coming from, then you draw the shadows the object has.

Now the other things here are types of drawing I use (I think you meant this under shading).

First off the crosshatching - useful to show the shape of things. If you use the patches technique, then if you adjust the patches according to the shape of thing, then you'll end up havin a 3D looking thing. And you can do the patches tighter to make them look darker (more lines together makes darker places.)
