"Valia Awakening was a short-lived but highly regarded part of the metamorphic comic boom. The story about a young woman who rescues a drake spirit that gives her the ability to metamorphose into a water dragoness whenever she is overcome with fear struck a chord with many readers, but it raised the ire of many conservatives. It and other titles sparked mass hysteria in many parents who feared their children literally turning into monsters. Even after the comic was banned, it remained extremely popular and influential underground, with pristine copies very difficult to come by as it was printed on cheap pulp that teenager read to bits long after it was out of print."
