Story below 🔽

"And you're smitten with something like this?” – Hope said, unable to contain her laughter. Flail looked peculiar, especially considering its religious purpose and previous owners.

“Yes… The monks there are usually very peaceful, but as you can see, there are limits. Getting smitten by a censer is a different experience. But hey, I had a unique encounter, fulfilled my task, so aside from some wounds, it was a good day.”

“And instead of cursing and hunting every monk because of this, you decided to deepen your faith?” – she said, still smiling at the amusing story.

“Kind of ironic, right? You get pushed to the limits, bullied, kicked, but you can find something valuable in almost everything – even in such a comedic situation like this.”

“At least, in your opinion, as long as you still have hope, right?”

“Yes, I know it sounds corny — three big values and ideas that change everything, right? We have a key to the meaning of all life. Philosophers, religions, psychologists keep repeating and modifying, adding something more to this rule that we don’t even know who said first, and yet here we are in this mess.”

“But you still stand by all three? Okay, hope is banal — as long as you have hope and don’t lose it, you will be able to maintain motivation and strength to do what it takes. And if you lose it all, you can end up in a really bad place — like a pit with furious horned monster. Simple. But how does it lead to faith? Most beings don’t believe in godlike beings or even anything.”

“It is not that kind of faith. I didn’t say in what these monks believed... They prayed, gathered, and believed in everything they were doing there. These researchers wanted to change the nature of hybridoids, the ferocious ones. They were dying trying, but they believed in one piece of information that they weren't even certain of, and they believed in the goal they set, they believed in themselves.”

“It sounds like you have respect for them, even though they almost killed you when you tried to take down Capra.”

“Certainly, despite everything that happened there, they aren't my adversaries. In fact, they've left an indelible impression on me, prompting a deep dive into science and philosophy to fathom the purpose of it all. But simplicity holds profound value, don't you think? Pure intention — engaging in goodness not because of external pressures, not for a trophy displayed before you, and not out of fear of repercussions. The most precious act is when you do it simply because you can, because you want to, and because you truly believe in it — just because, to the fullest extent. And that's precisely what monks did. They wanted to help, just because, even though uncertainty clouded their path.”

“So, hope for enduring the critical moments, faith for sustaining belief in the core of your actions in the long term, right?”

"Yes, essentially. But this topic could be discussed for hours. It appears deceptively simple.”

"Hmm, but do you believe in The Five Church dogma?"

"The one that designates you as some goddess of sorts, representing embodiment of Hope?" - he chuckled.

"Given your reaction, I assume not... I don't either."

"Why haha? It could perfectly align with your calm, peaceful, and gracious persona."

Observing that he had no intention of letting up on his jokes, she attempted to shift the conversation.

“Alright, but this intrigues me. What did the monks heard or found, that drove them to attempt something so risky?”

“Some sort of Pre-Coalescence nonsense...” – he smiled, though she detected a hint of hesitation in his voice.

“You believe it now too, don’t you? What is it? Ohh... That’s why you're refraining from harming everyone you've hunted!” - she realised

“No, it's a matter of pure morality, akin to your little sanctuary in the old manor.”

She froze again, experiencing a sense of déjà vu for the second time this evening.

“How... how do you know about it?

“Haha, come on, I needed to know your name and looks from somewhere, right? I have my sources, and besides, hey, it's my job, so why don’t we talk about it?”

He grinned slyly after turning the tables so swiftly, and she regretted even more not finding a different spot for the night.
