I tried various ideas here, including what kind of function would this and that serve to an ancien society living underwater built on what? Power? Peace with nature?
I kinda felt that an ancient society of underwater humanoids would be a communal thing, where the individual is obsolete and everyone is treated kindly but the whole is what matters, it's only later that free will and individualism appeared in intelligent species, which is probably why the Gillman hates us? Or maybe they are more intelligent than humans, but we have bigger brains?
