Description Twenty years ago I made four new characters. They were roommates at a college for superheroes. (Because that was the coolest thing I could think of at the time.)

The picture on top is my attempt to recreate what they would have looked like back then. This is obviously not the art I was producing at that age, but I did add in some of what I consider to be my most prominent early mistakes and only used the colors that would have been available to me in the super duper fancy marker set I had at the time. (No, I wouldn't have thought to shade them back then ... but I was 14 so whatever ... and I tried to leave it out here, but I couldn't bear to look at it.)

The picture on the bottom is how they look today. They have been through several reincarnations (sometimes literally), crossed into a different universe, and have come out more or less very different people. (One of them even changed species!)

In 1995, they were (left to right):
Kazan Morelli: Angel/Alien. Adopted by a human family. Abilities undefined.
Reg Lahey: Orphaned and rescued by the school. Known to be the most charismatic person on the planet.
Riva McGein: Irish werewolf. Parents Connor and Nora McGein. I really put him through some nasty stuff when I was that age including loss of eyes (those are cyber eyes), a rare cancer that only the red-haired males of his family could get, and he was bi-polar before I really knew how to represent it realistically.
Azreal Mercimai: Vampire/Superhero. Son of Lunette "NoFace" Bruce and Talvar Mercimai. He had the ability/disability to kill anyone he touched skin to skin if he had seen their face. I didn't include the bat wings he had at first. I dropped them after only a week, so I didn't think they were needed.

(They were all 19 years old when the world ended and they, as characters and (in some cases) as souls, moved on to their next lives.)

In 2015, they are (left to right):

Kazan: He lost the last name. No longer human, he is the self-inflicted endling of the Florians . Less angel, now all alien ... and a sentient plant. He is the oldest (well over 100,000) and most immediately dangerous of the four, capable of absorbing souls (hundreds at a time), and using their energy as he sees fit. He is recently married to someone who has the patience and intelligence to understand him , and adopted Jed Neilson because they both needed one another. He is smiling in the picture ... as best he can. Florians do not have the required facial muscles. That's not to say he isn't emotionally stunted. He is. His people were never meant to feel anything but loyalty and controlled rage. His long life has begun to teach him otherwise.

Reg Isola: He is still extraordinarily charismatic, perhaps only slightly less so than his father ... but not by much. This time around, the first time in all his three incarnations, he has a good family. He is the youngest of the Isola siblings (Travis and Maria's children), which has given him certain advantages. In his second story, he gained phenomenal musical talent. Now it's taken a step farther. He is now the first name in entertainment in the galaxy. According to current newsfeeds, he has been seen the company of Artusian hairmodder Lise. Unusual genetics have given him a split-down-the-middle look. One half has dominant genetic markers of each parent. His media and entertainment empire is the largest in the galaxy, and one of the top ten in the known inhabited universe.

Riva McGein: Still a werewolf, but no longer Irish. He is from a disbanded culture of lychanthropes that read somewhere between Cajun and Irish/Scottish. I'm afraid I haven't been that kind to him this time around either. He lost his eyes, survived the same cancer, and is still bi-polar (this time with my much better understanding of how it works). Of all of them, he is the least changed. But he didn't need as much revision. What I gave him in crap, I've tried to match in reward. He is the captain of the Dogstar: a mechanid noble's personal yacht, that has been custom refitted as a freighter. It's massive, roughly 5,000m from one end to the other, with a distinctive star shape. He was given the additional gift of advanced speed, strength, and tracking (advanced, not super). He has a supersoldier wife named Kali  and baby daughter Madeline.

Azreal Volotov: One of a super smart and apocalyptically capable family otherwise known as the Deathsmiths. He is the only child of Lunnette and Hephestus Volotov . While he is just as smart and dangerous as they are, he is only 30 years old next to their unknown thousands and lacks their experience. He is half human, half Nia'Zin, with the special enhancements that turn a normal member of either race into a Deathsmith. He is shapeshifter (who has been known to shift relative mass as well, which is as problematic as it is puzzling to those trying to figure out how he does it). For all the threat he poses to existence as we know it, he is rational, compassionate, and kind. He is currently living in the ASS Empire helping to prepare for the Prime War (for fun), and madly in love with Reg's older sister Andrea .

By some miracle, they have managed to reunite in this life. Something within them remembers one another from so long ago and far away.

So they have come a long way and have evolved in ways I never would have imagined when I first made them. I'm pretty sure they did some of that changing while I wasn't looking. I was proud of them then, and love them even more now.

It's always amazing to see how much our characters change and develop, and how much they don't. Some things in them never change, and some of them do, and some of them change in ways we never could have imagined. I really think it's one of the greatest joys of having a character. Like parents we get to help shape them, and watch them grow into something else. Finding the strength to stand back and let them make their own bad choices and being happy for them when they finally find some measure of peace and happiness. I love this tribute, and I'm glad that these characters have stayed with you all these years. <3

This looks fantastic.
I love how you have created something like this, it inspires me to do one with my little babes. I love Kazan's transformation, looks so strong and detailed.
