Description
Taken 2 December 2009 on my trip to Denver, Colorado for the annual NAIS POCC + SDLC , which I was fortunate enough to attend as a senior in high school along with a handful of underclassmen and several teachers. We walked around the city a bit on the first evening we were there. It was in the teens (Fahrenheit) temperature-wise, but it was beautiful nonetheless. Our hotel was only a few blocks from the capital area and thus City Hall. At the time, John Hickenlooper was mayor of Denver; he is now the governor of Colorado. He made time in his schedule to meet with us for a nice conversation (and a photo-op) in his office. This was kind of a spur-of-the-moment idea on our part!
Hickenlooper is an alumnus of my school, class of 1970. He's also a socially liberal Democrat, so he was very supportive of us attending the SDLC conference and the messages they sought to convey to youth in independent schools across the nation.
I have exclusively positive memories of the entire trip. It was, beyond a shadow of a doubt, a life-changing experience.
This photo is actually a fusion of this and this .
Fun fact: the native Arapaho people refer to Denver and its general vicinity as Niinéniiniicíihéhe.
