Description
He didn't win the race. The cross-country meet ended with a lap around the track. When he went into those 400 meters he was behind. With 200 left, he knew he couldn't catch him. And at 100 meters, it became apparent he was second.
Everything caught up with him then. It shows on his face and in his straining sinewy limbs carrying him to the finish line.
He is still concentrated on that final goal.
He doesn't look at the fans to his left; doesn't even notice them.
Half of them are cheering him on hopefully, but once he passes, they turn to anticipate the teammate behind him, and he runs on to the finish line like it's all that matters.
