Nelly was brought up in her villages poorest district by her single mother as the middle child between 2 older brothers and 1 younger brother. Nelly's mother was extremely forgiving to all of her sons while Nelly got the brunt of her cruelty, often forcing her do most of the house chores while her brother's played outside with all of the other children. Nelly was told by her family peers that her mother was simply trying to make Nelly the best woman possible for a bride despite being only 10 at the time. After that, Nelly procrastinated on chores to go out and play in the woods. However one day Nelly slipped rock's in a near by creek, causing large cuts on her legs and hands, her mother found out a few days later and Nelly was forced to stay inside to do her usual chores.

When Nelly turned 15, her mother and a local noble were arranging Nelly and the noble's son to be married. Nelly objected harshly, but it made no difference. However Nellys brothers helped their sister plan her escape via enrolling in the Royal Academy for Medicine and Necromancy. After filling out pages and pages of paperwork, Nelly came home from a long day of customary bride practices to see her 3 brothers holding a letter from the academy, saying she was accepted and would be called for duty on her wedding day. So Nelly waited and waited all while her 2 older brothers packed her stuff (for what their mother assumed was for when Nelly moved in with her husband). However when the day of the wedding came, Nelly never showed up only leaving a letter to her mother and her dress to the noble son's future wife.

Nelly then spent the next 10 years shut into her studies. She almost never came out of her dorm but when she did, it was to out show the majority of her classmates. However Nelly took note that nice smelling or tasting healing potions resulted in weak results, at least too weak to their potential. So one day Nelly made potions that smelt of hydrogen peroxide and tasted like garbage water. The potion out performed anything the professors had seen but due to Nelly's bad temper and the fact she didn't make aesthetically pleasing potions, Nelly received the lowest grades and was thrown out of the academy.

Nelly considered going home, but she remembered why she left and how disappointed her brother's would be, so Nelly spent 2 years being a house call medic. Nelly eventually scraped enough money to afford her necromancer staff and custom medic outfit then left town, traveling in quest parties as a medic and took her share when they got to their destination.
