Viteran Imperative Runesalso known as Viteran Verbs

Although there are no truly universal runic systems used in Alva, the Viteran Verbs are recognised across many magiciscientific communities. Pioneered millennia ago by an empire that once spanned the Jewel Sea, it has become a baseline of sorts for those learning runes - many mages are introduced to Viteran Verbs early in their training, in order to structure the way they manipulate elemental ether.

Each Viteran rune represents a simple, single command, typically directed towards an individual element or component. The simplicity helps beginners to focus, but also allows more advanced mages to combine runes in long, complex strings that achieve finer movements. Many mages, when further into their training, will create their own personal runic systems that are tailored to themselves, but the Viteran Verbs are often retained as a base (even if they are greatly reimagined).

Beyond mages, Viteran runes are employed by alchemists in recipes and recordkeeping. They are used as shorthand to describe the treatment of ingredients and processes, and are thus often found in alchemical equations.

In more magically-inclined regions, some Viteran Verbs are recognisable to laypeople as well, as they are sometimes used as everyday labels - such as 'close' on a door that is meant to stay shut or 'burn' on a bundle of herbs that should be activated by fire.
