The hatching system is a way to represent tinctures in a colorless context such as a black and white text. The tinctures are replaced by a series of hatches within the figure.
The first version of this method included only the main tinctures. With the evolution of heraldry and the use of less common tinctures, it has evolved adding new hatches.

The "black" and "proper" tinctures are represented in two different ways.
The hatching of "tenné" is formed by the patter of "vert" and "purpure", while the hatching of "iron" appears with the lines not forty-five degrees inclined but usually sixty degrees inclined.

Il metodo Pietrasanta è un modo per rappresentare gli smalti in un contesto privo di colore come può essere un testo in bianco e nero. Gli smalti vengono sostituiti da una serie di tratteggi all'interno della figura.
La prima versione di questo metodo comprendeva soltanto gli smalti principali. Con l'evoluzione dell'araldica e l'utilizzo di smalti meno diffusi, si è evoluto aggiungendo nuovi tratteggi.

Gli smalti "nero" e "al naturale" sono rappresentati in due diversi modi.
Il tratteggio del "tanné" è formato da quelli di "verde" e "viola" uniti, mentre il tratteggio del "ferro" non ha le linee inclinate di quarantacinque gradi ma solitamente di sessanta.
