Description
Well, with both Smudger and Bertram, I might as well add proteus to the fleet. Yes, he technically is not real [at least as far as we know…] but he’s become such a recognizable character in the fandom, that I just couldn’t leave him out. I guess there’s just something about a mythical, possibly supernatural character with an unknown status that just really intrigues people. No one can even say what his actual story is, because he’s never actually had one, only a spooky story about the legend of his magical headlamp. I guess this adds more intrigue to him because it leaves him open to way more headcanons.
His signature magical lamp is also an interesting touch, as we tend to associate magic lamps with genies, not engines; and yet somehow, a magical engine lamp that grants wishes is a surprisingly inspired idea.
All of this said; one has to wonder how he’s compared to Lady, who’s story we actually know, and whose existence is [at least somewhat] confirmed. I have to wonder if some people think proteus would’ve made for a better magical lost engine, as maybe he seems more believable than Lady. And going from there; is Proteus actually an engine on a magical narrow-gauge railway?? It’s a lot to think about, which I guess goes to show why he’s such an intriguing character.
Since his model had Peter Sam’s chassis, I tried witching out Sir Handel’s with peter Sam’s, but they’re both so similar, that really all I did was replace the bogey wheels. Beyond that, the only other thing I did was rebuild the funnel to accommodate his signature magic lamp
