About Seven Months Ago
‘It’s still not too late to abandon this project.’
The words stung Cara. She was in the same meeting room as all the other scientists, but they seemed oblivious to her presence. At the head of the table was Flynn with Derrick, his latest PA. All she could do was shudder.
‘But all her tests were promising,’ said Flynn. He avoided looking directly at her, choosing instead to address her biggest critic, lead scientist, Dr Sean Harper.
‘There is a difference between what’s on paper and what comes out once all the procedures have begun,’ he replied. From the very beginning, he was against her. ‘I warned you about using the procedure on a regular person. Soldiers have a different level of commitment, of discipline that the average person will never have,’ he fired back with an air of finality.
Flynn carried less weight here. The scientists here answered to his father, Harold. She had heard that even he was against putting a regular maid through the procedure, but then finally decided his son needed to learn the lesson the hard way. She suddenly felt it building up again and an uncontrollable shudder shook her body where she sat in her chair. She knew everyone saw it or heard her chair judder, but they at least gave her the dignity to ignore it. Flynn however was lost in thought.
‘Derrick, show me those results again,’ he said finally. He glanced at the single sheet that summed up more than a couple of months’ worth of procedures, tests, and results. ‘These numbers are acceptable,’ he said at last.
Harper nearly turned red. ‘They are nowhere near where her initial tests projected!’
‘They are good enough to get her into stage two,’ replied Flynn.
‘There are other, better suited candidates for stage two,’ replied Harper, then added, ‘And there's no telling her side effects won't get worse! I’m sure everyone here agrees with me!’ Harper was confident he had the numbers to prevent Cara from making the cut.
For the first time since the meeting started, Flynn turned to Cara and said. ‘Or they could disappear all together. Tell me, Cara, do you want to quit now?’
Cara had been putting up with disappointment after disappointment ever since the first of the many procedures began to turn her into a superheroine. That morning, she was ready to give up on it herself. However, somehow the words Flynn chose to ask her that day fuelled something within her. She had always quit when things got dangerous. She had always played it safe. She decided at that point, no more. ‘I don’t know the meaning of the word.’ she replied with determination.
‘See. That right there is the spirit of a hero,’ said Flynn with a quiet confidence, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, I think it’s… to quote a movie metaphor, time we leave the hard science documentary behind. We’re going to go forward with a sports film. That right there, is the plucky underdog, someone that everyone here does not believe in, and as long as she believes in herself, I believe in her, and if I believe in her, so does Flynn Technonogies. So I only need two of you, who believe in your hard work that went into Cara and that she will be more than the numbers in your sheets. Cara, these numbers say you’re not predisposed to strength, but to speed, so we’re going to change your training program. Derrick, get me some trainers, sprinters, marathon runners and,’ he looked at her for a while, ‘Boxers. In one month’s time, we will review the numbers again and at that time, I know all of you will sign off for phase two.’
Flynn stood up with an air of finality. He nodded in her direction. She acknowledged it. And they parted ways. This was the first time she had seen him without a glass partition between them in months. She wanted to cry but huffed hard instead and steeled herself. She had one month to prove to herself that his faith in her was not misplaced.
As Flynn walked down the corridor, Derrick congratulated him on his speech. ‘I think you turned a couple of them around,’ he said.
‘I fucking better. I hate to lose a bet,’ Flynn grumbled.
