Software Introduction Week
This article is animated gif heavy. If you have a slow internet connection, some of these gifs may take a moment to load. Also, the article is quite long, so get comfortable!
Use it everywhere!
Autodesk SketchBook is one of those programs that exist not just for computers (Mac and Windows), but also mobile devices. And not only as a simplified app of the desktop version. No. The whole thing. And while until recently you had to pay for the “Pro” version of it, which offered more features, it is now completely free. Well, except some brush packs you may want to get, but really, that’s besides the point.
That said, I do not have the mobile app, as I do not own an iPad or Android tablet, so I cannot show you anything there. However the desktop version looks and acts pretty much the same way, as far as I know.
Workspace
This is the default workspace that you will see when you open the program for the first time. It looks very basic, I know. It also looks very white, which can be extremely straining on the eyes. I’ll get to that in a minute.
Let's check out this default layout first:
Tool Bar
Most of these icons should be familiar to those of you who have used other programs before, and their use is the same as in most other programs, even if their name is slightly different.
Lagoon
The Lagoon is a mini menu that has the most common tools in it that the Tool Bar and Brush Palette have as well, and as such is somewhat superfluous. However, you may prefer it to keep your screen completely free from any other menus and palettes, so let's have a look at it:
Click to get the pop up circle, then hold and drag your cursor around to select an item. If it looks a little cumbersome, that's because it is, I find. But hey, you might actually get on well with it. Also, as you can see, if you hover over an icon, it will show you what it is called. It's fool proof.
The little dotted circle on the left lets you choose where you want to dock the Lagoon, and a few other things. But to completely remove this little gadget, click on Window in the menu bar at the top, and then on Lagoon to untick it (this is also where you find all the other palettes that you can have on your screen).
Colour & Brush Pucks
Odd little things they are...
The dark framed Colour Puck is straight forward in that clicking it will give you a colour wheel, palette, and Eye Dropper to pick colours from the canvas. However, it also gives you the option to increase or decrease the Luminance and Saturation of your chosen colour. Click and hold, then dragging left or right will decrease/increase the saturation, and draging up or down will increase/decrease the Luminance.
The light framed Brush Puck works the same way in that you need to click and hold, then drag your cursor left or right to change the brush size, and up or down to change the opacity of your brush. And you have to do that repeatedly sometimes to get the size or opacity you want.
The changes are shown at the bottom centre of your screen.
You can move the Pucks around on the screen like you would any normal window on your computer, by clicking anywhere on the frame and dragging them around. To make them disappear, click the little circle in the corner.
Canvas
The white background of the program is in fact the canvas. By default every new canvas opens full screen, always at 100dpi and your screen resolution, with a paintable layer already added.
This is fine if you just want to doodle around or test brushes and other things, but not very useful for when you want to actually sketch or paint something that is more than just a scribble. A good size for a canvas is usually between 2000 and 4000 pixels. More is not really necessary, though of course you can go for it if your computer can handle it. Also 300dpi is preferred for print media. For web use, the default 100dpi is perfectly okay.
So what to do to change this?
Preferences
Click on SketchBook in the menu bar at the very top left, then Preferences. This window will open, and the different tabs will give you a chance to change certain default settings of the program:
Play around with the different settings in the different tabs, see what works best for you and your computer. If you don’t like the changes you’ve made, you can always reset them to the Factory Defaults (last tab), or simply change them manually again.
Now that you know about this, let’s set your default canvas size to whatever your preference is under the Canvas tab. Here is what I chose:
You can now go ahead and open a new canvas, discarding the old. Just click on File in the menu bar, and then New.
Whenever you open the program from now on, or just a new canvas, this canvas size will open automatically as the default, and as before will have a paintable layer already added to it. However, it will still be white.
Now, let’s tackle that before anyone’s retinas will be burnt to a crisp.
Layers
To open the Layers Palette, click on the Layers icon in the Tool Bar, or simply click on Window in the menu bar, and then Layer Editor. This little thing will pop up:
[ excuse the pixelated colours, that’s just the gif, not the program… ]
As you can see, there is a layer already there, and the background. The background cannot be painted on at all in this program, but you can change its colour by clicking the white circle on the right and choosing a colour you want the background to be.
Don’t see the white circle because everything there is just white? - Calibrate your screen, darlings! Your contrast is way too high!
Sticking with the layers, let’s check out the different things you can do in the Layer Editor that are most used while working:
One may not be enough, and you'll want to use different layers for different things in your drawing or painting. New layers are always added on top of the one you have selected (framed blue).
You can either click the + that I conveniently circled, or go the cumbersome route and do what you can see in the gif. Personally, I'd be lazy and just click that +.
Deleting a layer only works if you have more than one layer in the layer palette, as the palette requires to have at least one active layer present.
- Moving, Hiding, & Changing Layer Opacity
Sometimes you may find that you want to change your layer order, and you can do that by clicking and holding the arrows and then dragging the layer up or down in the Palette.
Hiding a layer may come in handy when you don't want to see something for a while, but don't want to delete it. Just click the Eye icon of the layer you wish to hide. Clicking it again will reveal the layer once more.
Maybe you would like something to be very transparent, so that whatever you painted beneath shines through. Just use the slider on the side of the layer to decrease or increase its opacity.
Bear in mind that the arrows to move a layer will only appear when there are at least two layers present.
Let's say you've filled a line drawing with solid colours, and now want to add more detail to those colours, but really don't want to be careful about not going over the lines, then this comes in handy.
All the transparent pixels of that layer will be locked, so you can go wild while staying within the lines. To unlock, simply click the lock again.
These darlings are like the special effects of painting. Seriously.
They work best on a canvas that is not white or black, and if you use a paint colour on your layer that is not white or black either. Play around with them and see what works best for whatever it is you want to do!
Brushes
With everything essentially set up to start painting or drawing, the one thing that's missing now are the brushes.
Brushes, Pens, Markers, Erasers and Smudge Tools all fall into this category, and you can tell which is which by looking at the icons. To select one, just click on it in the Brush Palette and you're good to go.
To change the Brush Properties not using the Brush Puck, click on the little slider icon at the top left, and a new window will pop up:
These are the simple settings that the Puck can also perform. But if you happen to select a brush that has Advanced Settings as well (not all of them do), this is the thing you want, because the Puck doesn't do anything advanced.
Play around here until you find the settings that work for you. Explaining them all would do no good, because the possibilities are endless and you need to experiment for yourself. Hell, I play around with the settings all the time, trying things to see what my painting might benefit from in that very moment.
You can also apply a Blending Mode to your brush directly, called Type here. It works just like the Layer Blending Modes, but cannot be changed once you have painted something with them, unlike the layer ones.
To change the Brush Set altogether - the program comes with a good few of them, and they are more than enough to get you started - click on the small icon at the top right, and yet another Palette will open: The Brush Library.
You can leave this open and simply close the small default one, or pin a single brush set to the small default Brush Palette using the radial menu to the right of each Brush Set. Doing this allows you to close this rather large window again and have more space for your canvas.
Play around with all the brushes, see what you like, and how they function. Some blend while painting, others don't. Some can only paint dark over light, not light over dark (Felt Tips & Copic Markers), and again others are rugged or harsh or fuzzy.
Hold up a minute! Did you just mention Copic Markers?!
Yes. Yes I did.
An actual Copic Marker Brush Set that behaves like real Copic Markers. What's more, it comes with a Copic Library. What's that, you wonder? Well, the entire set of 358 colours released by Copic, plus the colourless Blender. Just click on the Copic Library icon in the Tool Bar, and this is the glorious rainbow you get:
Obviously not all at once. But I wanted to show all the colours, so there you have it.
These are the different things you can do with this palette, and I think it's rather cool.
I love using the Custom Set box to have the main colours of my painting at hand at all times, and don't have to click through the library to find them again. The box will extend indefinitely the more colours you add. To remove the colours from the Custom Set, simply drag them out of the box. That's it.
Now that we have all of this out of the way, what else is there?
Common Tools
While brushes and colours and layers are most definitely the most important things when you want to draw or paint, there are a few other tools that might come in handy as you're working.
To simply zoom in or out, move the canvas around on the screen, or rotate it, all you need to do is click the Magnifying Glass in the Tool Menu:
[ click for full size gif ]
This puck will always move with your cursor, so don’t be surprised when it follows you around on the screen. Click, hold and move your cursor to use any of the functions. To close it, simply click the X, or click the Magnifying Glass in the Tool Menu.
NOTE
If you have a touch screen, or a tablet with touch function, can simply use your fingers, pinching and turning them to zoom in or out or rotate the canvas without even bothering with the Magnifying Glass, just like on an iPad or Android Tablet.
This thing is great for - you guessed it - cropping the canvas.
[ click for full size gif ]
Cropping does not only mean to cut stuff off. It can also mean to add height or width to your canvas. Remember though, once you cropped your image, anything you cut off is indeed gone.
To resize an image without losing any part of it, go to Image in the Menu Bar, then Image Size. There you can change the size (Pixel Dimensions) of your image.
Feel like you need to make something bigger or smaller, or even change the rotation or prespective?
[ click for full size gif ]
There are two options with this tool; the first one is a straight forward rotation/increase/decrease in size, and the second one (in the gif) lets you really pull, push, and skew things.
Note that everything on a layer will be affected by this tool. To only transform part of a layer, select the part you want to transform first by clicking the Select icon in the Tool Bar. Once you have selected the part, you can click the Transform icon and transform it.
Want to draw straight lines? This is the thing for you.
[ click for full size gif ]
It doesn't matter where on the canvas you set your brush down, it will always draw along the line. It's magic like that.
Perfect Circles or Ellipses? - No problem!
[ click for full size gif ]
Once again the brush will automatically stick to the guide while drawing without you even trying. More magic.
Not happy with how you cannot seem to get your freehand lines to look neat, and want to slow down the way the program reads your brush movement? This'll do it.
[ click for full size gif ]
It will greately help you with creating sweeping lines slowly and steadily, though it won't smooth out any wobbles.
This is a curious little thing, somewhere between the Steady Stroke and "Help, the AI is taking over!". If you suffer from shaky hands, or just want your lines to look smoother without slowing you down, this tool will do it.
[ click for full size gif ]
Bear in mind this tool is not perfect. Sometimes it really just makes stuff up.
Drawing something that is perfectly symmetrical is hard freehand. This is where this tool comes in handy, and it gives you a few options:
[ click for full size gif ]
Vertical Symmetry: Horizontal Symmetry works the same way, you just need to unclick the vertical button and click the horizontal one right next to it.
[ click for full size gif ]
Cross Symmetry: This employs both the Vertical and Horizontal Symmetry, so both of the buttons need to be clicked.

Radial Symmetry: The Motherload of all Symmetry... or something. While vertical and horizontal are possible to pull off freehand, kind of, this one would be a hell of a lot of work.
Want to draw buildings, or a cityscape or scene that adheres to proper perspective? This tool will help you create your own perspective grids, and you can choose from One Point, Two Point, Three Point and Fish Eye Perspective. For ease of showing this, I chose One Point Perspective only:

Your brush strokes will always gravitate towards the vanishing point (the white circle), and will always be perfectly straight. As you can see, you can also draw perfectly straight horizontal and vertical lines while using this tool without doing anything extra - just be careful near the vanishing point, as lines tend to snap to it, rather than being horizontal or vertical. The white circles can also be used to distort and move the blue horizon line around the canvas.
Last, but not least...
Saving an image is just as important as creating it.
Go to File in the Menu Bar, then Save or Save As or Save a Copy As... - Save just saves the file you have, but if you want to rename it right now, or want a different file format, choose Save As. And if you do not want to save over the originally saved image, Save a Copy As (though Save As does the same thing if you change the file name, but whatever).
The most commonly used file format to show something online is JPEG, but be aware that saving it as such will flatten your image - that is, merging all the layers permanently. SketchBook will show you a warning message before it saves that it will do just that.
To save it for further editing in SketchBook with all the layers intact, Adobe Photoshop PSD, TIFF and PXD are your options. PXD is a format only used by Autodesk Pixlr, so unless you use that program, choose PSD or TIFF.
BUT: If you want to save it for further editing in another program, only Adobe Photoshop PSD and Adobe Photoshop TIFF will work.
And with this, I'm calling it a day.
I hope you enjoyed it and feel like you might want to give this program a go! If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments, and I'll do my best to answer.
