As I grow older, I find myself celebrating the day of my birthday less and less due to school/work/etc. I guess you come to realize that your birthday is no longer priority as it was as you were a child....doesn't mean I didn't have a party on a different day though.

I feel your pain, my birthday has rarely ever been on the weekend, and it was always in the busiest months of school and occasionally on work days too that I had to face reality and not celebrate my day

On my 21st birthday, my best friend was in Florida... but I said to myself, "fuck that! I refuse to get drunk without my friends around!", so I waited a whole month for everyone to have an open slot. My past few birthdays were flops: nobody new showed up, couldn't go were I had planned, and it always rained (maybe God doesn't like me). But my 21 first birthday came out better than expected.
...same two friends showed. Got my drink on though.
