I'm one of Alex's biggest fans and the part of his work that always gets me is his mastery of the skill of crosshatching. This is a shading technique that takes a LONG time to perfect, and he's been good at it since his earliest submissions in 2005.
In all three parts of this picture, the crosshatching has been so elegantly etched, and the ink-black portions contrast so wonderfully that one can stare for minutes going over and over the beautiful details again. We are provided with three concepts for the same character, each offering a quite a different take on her attributes, but always leading back to her magical nature. My personal favorite happens to be the second outfit, but I like all three.
This picture could not have been better if it were colored, and another of my favorite aspects of Alex's gallery is that he has shown that some things actually look better when devoid of color. Another great design, Mr. Cockburn; I continue to find inspiration from your work!
