Chapter 2:I saw him again.
He was passing me on the sidewalk the next day. That little boy who was with him, Danny, was compleately covered in blue waterproof with thick, red wool mittens over both hands, one of which was clinging to the back of his brother's jacket. His thick black curls were tucked neatly under the santa hat he'd gotten the day before. The older boy was exactly as I'd remembered him, save for a change of shirt- this time it was a tight fitting white tank- and new blue jeans.
This time, he noticed me first. I had been perched on the curb with a book, one of my favorites of Ellen Hopkins' freewrite novels. I felt a poke in my side and immediately jumped and slipped into the snow below. Behind me, the little boy was laughing his ass off, and his brother was suppressing a chuckle.
"Suprised to see me?"
I tried to keep my eyes from bulging. "Uh... yeah, actually." I got up quickly and brushed the snow off of my loose black jeans. "You were at the shop yesterday, right?" I tried to act casual, like I hadn't even thought twice about him.
"Yup. Danny here got this hat," he grinned, patting his brother's head. He had one protective arm around the boy.
"Oh-oh yeah," I stammered dumbly, as if it had slipped my mind.
He laughed like he knew what I was thinking. "You know, you're not like other people around here," he pointed out.
I looked down at myself. "Oh, so you noticed?" I muttered sarcastically. It was true; I wore dark clothes, was pale as hell (even for a Washington girl), I hardly smiled, and my straight up white hair stuck out like a sore thumb. I guess you could say I was... talented at being weird.
He looked down at himself in that same instance. "Yeah... I couldn't help but..." he trailed off with a pained expression in his cerulean eyes.
I tilted my head... again, stupid me. "Well, my dad always encouraged me to dress how I feel. So, I decided to be the only honest person in town."
He nodded. "So I take it you feel sad, alone, afraid..." he trailed off again, lost in thought. He looked past me, and I knew he was focusing on something no one else could see.
We stood there for a moment, then suddenly something occured to me. "What is your name?" I interjected.
He snapped back to attention. "Uh... sorry... My name is Demitri. Demitri DiNotte. And you are..?"
I smiled. "Cara Heatherwood."
A grin as big as the mountain broke out accross his perfect features. "Pleased to meet you, Cara."
Danny, who all this time had been waiting patiently, nudged his brother and jerked his hand in the direction of the Chocolate Factory shop. "Dem, let's go," he whined.
Demitri laughed a loud, heartstopping boom as he was tugged away. "Goodbye, Cara. I hope to see you again."
I lauged too, giving a little wave. "Bye, Demitri. I will see you again, I promise."
I knew I would.
