Description
8-bit Mario (from the Mario series, 1985)"8-bit Mario; Makes The Jump!"
-8-bit Mario takes on the design of Mario's "small" sprite from Super Mario Bros., appearing entirely 2-dimensional with frame-by-frame movement
-Lightweight character, high jumps
-Average walking speed, fast running speed
-Can't crawl; 8-bit Mario can jump much higher if he jumps out of a crouch
-All of 8-bit Mario's particle effects are also pixelated
Entrance: 8-bit Mario comes out of an 8-bit Warp Pipe
Neutral: Swings a whip downwards at very close range. This attack can be jab reset
Side tilt: Creates a single Green Fireball, which moves forward in a straight trajectory. If a diagonal upward input is used instead, he will throw a Red Fireball, which instead slowly bounces forward
Up tilt: Crouches, then performs a short jump punch. If 8-bit Mario hits an opponent, an 8-bit coin will come out of them
Down tilt: Slides forward while crouching
Dash attack: Holds his hands out and does a running push
Forward smash: Pulls out a Hammer and swings it down onto the ground in front of him
Up smash: 8-bit Mario ducks as two Lava Bubbles jump high into the air on either side of him
Down smash: Mario flips a switch and a Spark travels along the ground
Neutral aerial: A Fire-Bar spins around 8-bit Mario
Forward aerial: Tosses a single Hammer Bros. hammer in an upward arch. Up to 3 hammers can be on-screen at once
Back aerial: Turns around and swings a Hammer
Up aerial: Hits a Brick Block, causing it to break, both the act of breaking the Block and the broken pieces dealing damage
Down aerial: Drops a Brick Block straight downwards as a heavy projectile, able to meteor opponents hit by the bottom face of the Block. It will continuously fall until it hits the ground, after which it will break, the broken pieces also dealing damage
Grab: 8-bit Mario drops a Dead-end Drum in front of himself, trapping an opponent inside
Pummel: 8-bit Mario hits the Drum with a Hammer
Forward throw: 8-bit Mario hits a Bomb with a Hammer, blowing up the Drum and launching the opponent forwards
Back throw: Turns around and hits the opponent with a Hammer
Up throw: Tosses the opponent up and jumps to hit them, knocking them into the air, a Coin coming out of them on impact
Down throw: The Drum disappears, 8-bit Mario jumps and lands on the opponent, Burying them as he bounces off them again, a Coin appearing over 8-bit Mario's head on impact
Floor attack (front): Swings a Hammer in front of him
Floor attack (back): Swings a Hammer behind him
Floor attack (trip): Hits on both sides with a Hammer
Edge attack: Climbs back up and strikes with a Hammer
Dodge: Raises his hands and hops off the ground
Sidestep dodge: Crouches and slides backwards
Air dodge: Holds out his arms and legs
Neutral special: Fireball — 8-bit Mario tosses a singular small fireball as a projectile, which bounces forward along the ground. These Fireballs deal very light damage and do not make the opponent flinch, but can be rapid-fired. 8-bit Mario can throw Fireballs while moving and jumping
Side special: Koopa Shell — A move with slight startup lag, 8-bit Mario hops on top of a Koopa Troopa shell that appears in front of him, sending it forward along the ground as a projectile, dealing a fair amount of knockback on impact. The shell can bounce off walls, and can harm 8-bit Mario as well
Down special: Oil Drum — 8-bit Mario drops an Oil Drum on the ground in front of him. It will remain there for about 8 seconds, during which it will spit out a few slow-moving fireballs that travel along the ground. If 8-bit Mario summons a Barrel while in the air, it will drop down from below him, able to deal damage if it hits an opponent on the way down. Touching the flame coming out of the top of the Barrel will also deal damage to other fighters
Up special: Jumping Board — 8-bit Mario bounces off a Jumping Board, travelling high in the air. If this attack is used on the ground, the Jumping Board will remain for a brief period, with 8-bit Mario and other fighters able to bounce off it an additional time. If used in the air, the Jumping Board will fall, dealing damage if it hits a fighter as it falls
Final Smash: Power-Up Takedown — Mario raises a POW Block over his head and hitting it, creating a large shockwave around 8-bit Mario. If any fighters are caught in the shockwave, the scene changes to a bridge over lava from a Super Mario. Bros Castle level, with 8-bit Mario, under the effect of a Starman, rapidly running back and forth, juggling the trapped fighters over the bridge and racking up damage, before finally dropping the Axe, cutting the bridge and dropping them into the lava below, launching them out of the cutscene. If damage exceeds 100%, it's an automatic K.O.
Up taunt: 8-bit Mario adopts his "big" form, then shrinks again
Side taunt: 8-bit Mario looks straight at the screen, one hand raised in celebration
Down taunt: 8-bit Mario quickly and repeatedly jumps and hits a Brick Block, several Coins coming out of it before it breaks
Victory poses:
-8-bit Mario jumps into frame and approaches an 8-bit Princess Toadstool
-8-bit Mario jumps onto a flagpole and slides down it
-8-bit Mario repeatedly jumps through a large number of Coins, finally stopping as he collects them all
Series symbol (Mario):
A Super Mushroom
Kirby Hat:
A blocky Mario hat
Boxing Ring name:
"A Plumber's Humble, Blocky Beginning"
Alternate colors:
1. Standard appearance.
2. White and red; based on Fiery Mario
3. Green and white; based on Luigi's Super Mario Bros. sprite
4. Blue and red, paler skin; based on Mario's color scheme in Donkey Kong
5. Purple and brown; based on the Eggplant Man from Wrecking Crew
6. Maroon and black; pinker skin; based on Mario's sprite in Super Mario Bros. 3
7. Fully colored; based on Mario's 8-bit sprite in Super Mario Odyssey
8. Black and white; based on Mario's sprite from Super Mario Land
Likeliness of inclusion: Unikely
Nintendo and Sora Ltd. can easily add another Mario rep if they wanted to, and something like an 8-bit version of Mario is an eccentric and unorthodox choice one might expect from Smash. However, it is unlikely a 3rd Mario will be coming to Ultimate, and it is possible that an 8-bit Mario may not be technologically feasible
