mate, the leadership, I repeat the LEADERSHIP surrendered and begged the rest of the former Confederacy to give up effectively.... there is no 'interim government' and besides that, if they did exist, they're doing a piss poor job at reclaiming their independence

The leadership that you claim to have given up did the exact opposite, in fact that same leadership lead a rebellion throughout 1866 before being suppressed and imprisoned. Jefferson Davis died as the President of the occupied Confederacy and deemed the INTERIM GOVERNMENT of the Confederacy to live on for the sake of the Southern people in case the Confederacy were to be revived by the States.

again they're doing a piss-poor job at it. Besides that, I don't want to live under a government controlled by a bunch of racist elitist assholes who believed it's their 'right' to own people (which is what the Confederate Constitution mentions alot of and how it was UNCONSTITUTIONAL to ban it) and believed that the 'Negro' was little more then animals and thus should be enslaved. Instead of looking to the past, why can't we look to the future? We Southerners can do alot better then looking back at our dark past in an collectively stupid way, looking at this period of our history like it was a good thing instead of the horrid reality that it was.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

OddGarfield In reply to Freezepond [2018-01-09 02:53:44 +0000 UTC]

I have respect and integrity for the United States of America as a Country primarily for the aspect of Americanism and what is left of Jeffersonism. I do not however have much respect for the Federal Government of the United States aside from the current Presidency given how it has demonized and vaguely described the Confederate States of America as a "hateful rebellion bent on preserving slavery" when in reality, that was obviously not the case and wasn't a forefront topic of the War Between the States for the Union until they started using it as a propaganda piece against the Confederacy in 1863. That same propaganda is still used by the United States Federal Government today throughout the school systems and elsewhere.

What "secessionist organization" are you referring to? The Confederacy wasn't an "organization" at all.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Vader999 In reply to OddGarfield [2018-02-01 05:27:28 +0000 UTC]

But that was the case. The only reason the Confederacy wanted states' rights increased to a ridiculous extent is to defend their right to have slaves. And they only flipped out when an anti-slavery candidate gained power in DC. Where were the secessionists when Woodrow Wilson was enhancing the power of the government and centralizing the economy under the Federal Reserve? Or when FDR increased government power through Federal programs? Nada. They only rebelled because some bearded political hipster told them they can't bring enslaved humans to the Western territories.Β

They were nice to the Indians, though. And allowed them to have soldiers in the army.

πŸ‘: 1 ⏩: 0

Freezepond In reply to OddGarfield [2018-01-09 15:46:59 +0000 UTC]

I couldn't necessarily refer to the Confederacy as a "nation" either. As for the slavery part, you're probably going to think I'm going to say "The civil war was fought to free slaves." That was in no way true, but neither is your claim that slavery had absolutely nothing to do with the start of the war. It started because of an assumption that South Carolina made where they thought with the election of Abraham Lincoln, that he would overstep his limit of power as president, and among other things, that he would destroy the south's way of life - which included slavery.

The war itself was not fought over who was right or wrong, it was just the US trying to take back their land. It just so happened that the Confederacy didn't want big government influence against their decisions, but it couldn't be a coincidence that the entire Confederacy consisted of almost every single pro-slavery state. Correlation doesn't equal causation, but if it wasn't for preserving their "way of life," what was their real motivation?

"[T]he Democrat plantation"? What does that even mean?

Anyway, what "nonRevisionist history book[s]" do you think I should read? Because I have a few recommendations for you: the declarations of secession from the various Confederate states (the South Carolina one is especially illuminating and is the one that started the war). The Cornerstone Address (wherein the vice president of the CSA explicitly brags that the CSA is founded on the idea, "that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery -- subordination to the superior race -- is his natural and normal condition."). And the Confederate constitution itself is pretty illuminating. It only has seven articles but one of them is devoted almost entirely to promising that slavery will be kept legal.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

R101D In reply to jogiff [2018-01-30 11:19:31 +0000 UTC]

The Democrat party is the party of slavery, Jim crowe, racism, and antiAmericanism.

Second that is not the Confederate flag it is the battle flag of the first army of Virginia. That is revisionist history.

Good day sir

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

jogiff In reply to R101D [2018-02-02 23:36:35 +0000 UTC]

So, starting with your second point first, saying that the battle flag of The First Army of Virginia isn’t the Confederate flag is kind of like saying that the Kriegsmarine flag is not the Nazi flag. The battle flag was still originally used as part of the Confederate cause and is more widely used by neo Confederates for solely aesthetic reasons (just like the Kriegsmarine and the Nazis).

Secondly, addressing your first point second, if you’re going to accuse Democrats of being racist (and therefore anything they support being racist), then why doesn’t that apply to the Confederacy? The southern Democrats who led the Confederacy were much closer to the southern Democrats who enacted Jim Crow laws than modern Democrats are. The very nature of regional/national political parties has so fundamentally shifted along with the emergence of the Southern Strategy and the New Deal means that the Democratic Party of 2018 and the Republican Party of 2018 are virtually unrelated to the political parties of the Gilded Age.

How about you stop accusing anyone you disagree with of being a revisionist and start reading those sources I gave you.
