Description
originally was planning on holding off sharing this until new years, but eh, if it's done, why not share it ?enjoy, 88 pokemon total, all types included except normal (which is the center logo, and I don't really consider it a type, more like a lack of a type, plus, 17 doesn't divide well in a circle, so it had to be turned into only a symbol.
there's a pattern to the placement, one side super effecting the other
> = super effects < = super effected by
water > fire
bug < poison (generation 1 only)
ground > electric
ghost < dark
steel > rock
dragon < ice
fighting < psychic (messed up the pattern here, whoops >3<)
grass < flying
this really was a blast, and nice to have a good standalone art for this account now.
I geared toward placing types I like more on the outer circles, but types it super effected/get super effected by ending up having to go with them, so far as my type preferences it's jumbled.
for the type icons, some are from the card game, but the rest i had to make up. ones I made up are ground, rock, ice, ghost, flying, bug, and poison.
types that super effect have their badges on the left, types that are super effected have their badges on the right.
as for pokemon picking, mostly it was based on pokemon I like, but also did pokemon I figured would be cool to do in this style and such.
almost all of them you should (or I hope at least) be able to easily tell which pokemon they are. the only one you may be unsure of if in the dragon circle that's latios or latias. it is latias, and you can tell by how the head piece is, which is slightly different from latios far as where the eyes are and how they're shaped [link]
I based the spots on the primary type, which eliminated options in some of the circles, but kept the type of each wheel more focused
enjoy

It's an amazing circle!!!!
I've seen it like three weeks ago and let it in the message board until I could comment
Seriously, is an amazing job and I loved the colors, the simplification of every pokemon (Is that the right term, isn't it?) and also the geniality of weakness/fortify of the circle. Just great!

thanks, was really fun coming up with each style for each pokemon ( that's a good term for it yup), and yeah, some types made the circle tricky to pull off, but it worked out in the end

My first thought upon seeig this was Mayan/Aztec calender-type things. Really cool This is really impressively large, and all the lines are so clean and precise. I feel like every single Pokemon is like a heiroglyph or a carving that humans might have done in ancient times to represent them as mystical beings or something. And of course the shapes fit perfectly together and harmonise
Seriously, how long did this take? It's hard to pick a favourite, but I really like the whole electric wheel, Typhlosion, Whiscash, Donphan and Metagross. This is badass, I haven't seen anything like it before.

heh, all the hype about that apocalypse made me feel like doing that sort of style for this.
took about a week working on and off, semi long but not too grueling, just worked on some then took a break, then work on some more.
oh ho, glad you picked out ones you like more, was wondering if people were going to point out ones they like more
sweet, thanks a lot, aiming for more unique pokemon fanart

This is amazing! So much detail in every little piece of the circle.
I really like how you designed an symbol for each type, even the ones that don't have their own. And style is so cool too, like prints or mosaic tiles.
Great job~

oh ho, thanks a ton, fun trying different approaches with each pokemon and circle, and yeah, though I don't personally like all the type symbols I came up with (ghost is ehhhh, but I couldn't come up with something better), but overall I feel they do what they need to do. heh, yeah, kind of got the idea to do them like that from all the hype of the mayan circle lately and that apocalypse thing that never happened XD

Leptocyon In reply to ??? [2012-12-28 21:32:31 +0000 UTC]
Well, first off, I think this really deserves some serious admiration. Like for real. This was a wonderful idea and now that's finished it looks really effective. All those Pokemon looks wonderful in this style. It all looks like some ancient property drawn on a wall of some ancient ruin. 0.0
And one big "Well done" for finding difference between Latios and Latias expect for the color and eye shape. I didn't noticed until now that they have different shape on their heads and that it's differently positioned.
But one thing kind of bothers me. Not in some amount that should worry you (you could call that "Lepto's problems in head" or similar). You chose a circle as a composition element and it's wonderful. You almost executed it in a perfect way to go with the most important symbolism of a circle. Circle is a perfect shape, always described that way and usually holds that symbolism. I can see you understand that and that you tried to arrange types in some meaningful way, which you mostly succeed to do - you arranged them by effectiveness when one observe it with eye moving in a swirl pattern (or if you observe from up to down: "stronger" type -"weaker" type- "stronger" type - .... -like you explained in a description) or differently said, they are related if we look which type is positioned next to which. But what kind of bugs me is that they are not exactly related by which is positioned above/under which. It goes water-bug-rock-ghost-steel-dragon-fighting-grass, no specific order right? I tried to combine types so they are in relation when watching from all directions but since I'm kind of suffering from a lack of time and energy I gave up with a conclusion that there are too many possibilities to combine types by effectiveness (I also tried with pairs different from yours) and some of them give certain problems (to be specific-dragons with only one weakness except of their own type) so I didn't catch enough time to play with combinations. I'll try again tomorrow during ride home since I'll have plenty of time and if I come up with something I'll let you know if you want. This little puzzle quite intrigues me right now.
Maybe I'm splitting hairs with this. I don't know. It's just that when someone say "a circle" to me my first association is "perfection" and when you decided to use circle you had to be aware how tricky that could be. If it's executed good enough it becomes pure perfection. But now that I saw this "lack in perfection" I just can't comment with saying that this is perfect. I just hope that you will understand what I wrote here and what is my point. :/
Nevertheless, I think this is an outstanding piece of work. Whole idea is amazing and I can see that your brain works on some very interesting wave lengths. You didn't placed them randomly which is one big plus. I would just say that you didn't arrange them enough. I love to think that you had the same thing on your mind but just as me you couldn't mix that pattern in as well. :/

OddPenguin In reply to Leptocyon [2012-12-29 01:30:45 +0000 UTC]
oh man, really quite the detailed comment, thank ya. heh, yeah, with all this blah blah about the mayan circle and stuff, figured I'd do a sort of oriental like circle.
fun fact, this was actually originally going to be a pyramid, with types I liked more higher up, and types I didn't like down lower. however, a pyramid shaped deviation leaves a ton of blank space since submissions are always square, so I decided to do a circle.
the stronger weaker relation from top to bottom is the most meaning I came up with, but far as types next to each other like water/bug/ground/etc, those are just placed more or less on types I like more being further out in the ring, not really any relation or meaning in how far they are out on the circle. I wanted to do lots of water types, hence why they're on the outermost circle. limited in how many steels I could do drastically as I was only choosing by primary type, so they ended up closer in the circle. this was pretty much how the thought process went, I spent some time formulating the circle type placement, but not a ton, and I didn't flip around a bunch of possibilities like types next to each other also having a relationship.
I would be interested though if they're were a flowing relationship possible with all the types though, so if you come up with one let me know, I'm curious. probably wouldn't do another circle for it, but interested in knowing.
oh gosh of course this is not perfect, nope, not by any means, and not just because of arrangement either. the amount of blacks in each is very unbalanced and all over the place (banette draws my attention much more than it should for example), while I made dividers between the pokemon on wheels, I didn't make or use dividers between the wheels, so spacing on borders not all the same. some of the patterns I got a bit lazy on or lost the symmetry. so on and so on. super thanks for the feedback though and really quite interesting how much it became a puzzle to ya.

Leptocyon In reply to OddPenguin [2013-01-01 21:37:52 +0000 UTC]
I didn't mean you will make a new one. That would be kind of wasting time since you already did this and devote your time to this.
I tried and tried but I couldn't make a circle where types would correlate when reading from all directions. Dragons have that stupid one weakness and Ghost-Dark types are so closed with weaknesses and super effectiveness -.-; They kind of bothered me the most.

OddPenguin In reply to Leptocyon [2013-01-01 22:59:54 +0000 UTC]
yeah I know, just brought that up as if there was a perfect way to balance em then I'd consider it.
and yeah, a few of the types just mess it all up, I even had to use a super effectiveness that was only in gen 1 (poison super effecting bug) to make the circle work for me

thank ya,
in gen 1, poison super effected bug [link] (click on type, and under battle properties offensive, you'll see it for gen 1) . poison doesn't super effect bug anymore and only super effects, but each type needed a pair, and generally I wanted to keep the types I liked more farther out on the wheel, so bam, went with the super effective from gen 1 for that part
