Description
Rebloggable Tumblr version here: electrical-socket.tumblr.com/p…A method I learned from a guy on a trans reddit thread in my desperate searches for 'how to get out of a binder'...while stuck inside my new binder, unable to figure out how the hell to take it off. (I'm used to Underworks ones! I was fine with shimmying those things down off my hips for all my college years, but turns out you can't do that with a lot of other tank-top style binders, the neck opening just doesn't have enough stretch.)
I saw a post going around tumblr telling people how to put on a binder, and thought...well, that's surely quite self-explanatory, but taking one off...now that's another story! So I thought I'd spread the knowledge with a little demonstration from Caramel Latte - they're cuter than I am, haha.
Now, just a little disclaimer time - I can't promise this works for everything. My only tank top binder that fits me is my GC2B one (I, uh, 'grew out' of my Underworks Double Front, shall we say), but it works a charm with that one. A modified approach would probably work for short binders too! But yeah, basically I'm not the expert and this is basically me parroting another dude's advice, haha. I hope you find it as useful as I did!
(Seriously. I'm a huge clothing claustrophobe and I nearly died when I first put my new binder on and discovered I had no idea how to get out of it without Lubby around to yank the damn thing off of me.)
EXTRA ADVICE:
1) I hear rash guards are awesome to wear under your binder to make them easier to take off. I've heard guys swear by talcum powdering themselves under their binders to give the binder less grip on removal, as well.
2) If you're like me and freak out over being stuck inside things, do try not to panic. Getting all worked up = getting sweaty = welp, now that binder's gonna cling to you like a mofo. Breathe slow, take a second to relax, and don't start struggling around aimlessly because that is gonna get you a grand total of nowhere.
3) I don't actually have any more tips. I'm just going to plug GC2B's binders mercilessly, because they're AWESOME and actually comfortable to wear. Do check them out! And remember to always bind safely, wear binders the right size for you, and try not to wear one for over 8 hours at a time. Look after yourselves, okay? I want you all comfy and safe.

I'm really happy I could help! Getting stuck in a binder is the worst for those of us who don't like being stuck inside something, so I'm really glad I could assist in making that be a thing you don't have to be concerned about.

Thanks for making this, I have ordered a binder (but it hasn't arrived yet) and I know this will be helpful for when I need to take it off. Just asking, is it better to step into it instead of putting it on as a shirt?

oddsocket In reply to TransGenderFTM [2016-11-27 17:37:29 +0000 UTC]
It really depends on the make of binder you've ordered. I found it's literally impossible to step into gc2b binders - the neck hole is too small. It's a lot easier to stick your head and both arms into those and wrangle your way into it. However, it's a LOT easier to step into Underworks binders than to pull them on because the neck hole is bigger and the fabric is stiffer (which makes pulling it on VERY tricky).
TL;DR - For stiffer materials with large neckholes, step in to the neck and shuffle it up. (And probably get out of them by doing the reverse!)
For softer stretchier materials with small neckholes, put it on like a shirt.
I hope that's helpful!

I don't know the make of my binder but in the title it says Butterme, is that a brand of binder?
What you said was really, I will look back on what you said when I have my binder to remind myself on how to put it on.

In that case, I'd just judge it by fabric and neck-hole size. I don't have a whole lot of experience with off-brand Amazon binders, when you get it just make sure it stretches adequately to breathe in and it doesn't hurt to wear. (I've had experiences ranging from 'surprisingly good' to 'never again' with off-brand binders and now just stick to gc2b, haha.)

Ok, I did get my binder a couple weeks ago (sorry for the late reply, I had the flu) and I saw it had a opening on the side with about 8 hooks so that makes it easy to get it on. My one does hurt to wear, my chest hurts and I struggle to breath a bit.

oddsocket In reply to TransGenderFTM [2016-12-09 17:26:03 +0000 UTC]
Your binder is definitely too small and is probably pretty unsafe to wear (this is why I try to recommend against Amazon-bought binders because they're often not good or safe build quality). D: A good binder shouldn't be hard to breathe in!
If you get the chance, do check out gc2b or underworks, they're relatively affordable binders by companies that care about not hurting people with their products.

Ok, I don't think I can afford another one. (where would be a good place to get a binder?) I thought it would since it presses on your chest.
I'll check them out and if i'm able to get one I will.

Ah dang. D: Yeah, while a binder does obviously constrict a little bit, you should be able to take a full breath in without it hurting. The only times my binders hurt are from the seams rubbing a bit after a long day's wear, or a little bit of backache. Rib/chest pain is a sign your binder isn't bodysafe for you.
If you need a binder but can't afford them, there are some places you can apply for a free (safe, usually Underworks or gc2b) binder. Here is probably a good place to apply: pointofpride.org/chest-binder-… They're US-based but send binders out internationally! Bind safe, dude.

Well after an hour or two of wearing it, it does start to hurt. So my binder isn't bodysafe, ok.
I'll think about using that since it would take 4 to 6 months to arrive.

.o. Congrats on your first binder, I am so so glad I could help! Honestly, that's exactly why I made this - I got stuck in mine and was frantically Googling how to get out, thinking 'Why in the fresh hell is this not easier information to find???' Helping people avoid ending up in the same situation is the least I could do. c:

No problem at all, always here to spread the word about these awesome binders! CG2B's binders really are the most comfortable I've ever worn, and given that I've owned a LOT of different binders over the years that is a fairly informed opinion on them, haha. I hope you like them as much as I do!

I got REALLY stuck once in my Underworks binder while taking it off. Like, I had got the bottom over my head but the top just wouldn't go past my shoulders so I couldn't see anything or move my arms or grab at anything and my hair got stuck in it too, and then I started freaking out and fell over XD When I finally got it off, I said "NO MORE" and ordered one with velcro.
I still have the Underworks one, but I don't wear it anymore, I just glare at it once in a while. I'm tempted to try it on again though just to see if this would make it easier to take it off, because it was a LOT easier to hide than my velcro binder. Buuuut I dunno, I'm afraid I might get stuck in the deathtrap binder again XD

Oh man, that sounds horrifying! Underworks binders really are a piece of work when it comes to getting them on and off. Depending on your build, it might be an option to pull it down instead of up when you take it off? At least in my case, the material was stretchy enough for me to get my arms out of the neck hole, and then I'd roll it down from there and shuffle it down and off my hips. It's still a bit of a workout to manage, but it's how I used to get out of mine!
If you do try this technique out with your Underworks binder, please do let me know how it goes! It'd be awesome to be 100% on whether this works for that style of binder. (I'm guessing it would work, because a lot of people bind with Underworks or similar, but given that my ones don't fit me I can't actually test it for myself - I can't get them on, let alone off!)

I had to cross my arms and pull it up like your tutorial says, but I didn't think of that for a while when I was stuck because I don't normally take my shirts off that way.

It is pretty awkward to do! I was a lot slimmer back then than I am now, I reckon if I had one these days I'd probably not be able to get out of it the same way. I'm really glad my tutorial could be helpful! I've never seen one with pictures either, and I figured the internet could do with one, so...! Thank you!
