Skyrim in particular is guilty of this by having a perk that adds up to 100% more magical armor ONLY if your character is wearing clothes. Which means no matter how exposed the outfit is, your mage character can have armor as good as the best heavy armors in vanilla Skyrim if you master the Alteration school of magic and add the points to the respective mage armor perk.
