Origins

The form Godzilla takes on in the climax of Godzilla: King of the Monsters as he reaches critical mass is given the name Burning Godzilla, the same name used for Godzilla's critical state from Godzilla vs. Destoroyah , in the short "Monster 101" bonus feature focused on the monster. Michael Dougherty refers to it as such during his audio commentary of the film, but alternatively calls it Atomic-meltdown Godzilla during the "Godzilla 2.0" bonus feature.
Mike Dougherty confirmed that Atomic-meltdown Godzilla is the result of Godzilla and Mothra's unique symbiotic bond and that only in the most specific of circumstances does this bond allow for such a result. Dougherty also explains that the Fire / Burning power-up is a temporary ability and not something Godzilla can call upon at random.
