Description

Personality

  • Both are extremely cruel and wicked, even amongst villains in a series which are know for being cruel & wicked, taking great joy out of killing others and have no regard for human life whatsoever{…right?}

  • However in truth, both are alot more layered than the begging of their stories seem to let one, with them just wanting to make things better with someone (DIO’s ideal of Heaven mainly being implanted by his Mother, who he wants to see again/Beatrice just wanting Battler to remember the promise he made to her as Sayo)

  • With the two just wanting to take everyone to an afterlife like state where they can just succumb to fate (DIO wanting to take everyone to Heaven so they obtain true happiness knowing their future ahead of time so they can make/Sayo believing the karma of Kinzo's crimes is dragging down Ushiromiya family, deciding that the only way to save them is to kill them all and so they can rest in the afterlife)

  • As the Murders they committed only being expansions to their goals (DIO, at least in Part 3, mainly killing those who get in his way (which is mostly everyone)/Sayo & Beatrice for the reasons above while also know what she is doing is wrong, wanted to be stopped)

  • Both are extremely theatrical & tauntful (which mainly gets shown through Engrish), mocking those who they see as below them…which is pretty much everyone in the series. This causing them to be extremely sore losers, not accepting that anyone can truly defeat them when it happens, which in combination with their Ego, it can lead to some truly cathartic scenes (Such as Jotaro beating the Everloving Shit out of DIO after he tried slice his head off & Beatrice having scolding tea splashed on her face by Lambdadelta, who then threatened her existence)

  • Both can actually act extremely peaceful and thoughtful when needed, but can quickly just flip on a switch to being a complete maniacs on a dime

  • Both are massive manipulators & liars, pretty much fucking with everyone the heads of everyone around them just to fulfil their own goals

  • Due to their abusive childhoods, both love to be positions of power, probably seeing it as cathartic to see others be below them

  • Both are also just the fucking biggest trolls in fiction besides The Reverse Flash

  • Both happen to be quite selfish & apathetic as well, with it seeing at some points that they don’t realise what they are doing is wrong (when in fact they do know what they’re doing is bad, but just do it anyway), but sometimes they do actually show that they can be thoughtful for others (DIO actually being a pretty good friend towards Pucci/Beatrice knowing when things have been taken to through and becomes alot better of a person by the ending of the story)

  • Both have an absolute undying hatred{?} for a single bloodline (The Joestars/Ushiromiyas) due to reasons connecting to their shitty childhood (Dio found it insulting that the Joestars could just live such a good life while he was just left in squalor/Sayo learning of Kinzo's actions and the cliff incident, which caused her body to be mutilated) which consumed them and their entire lives from there on out, causing them to want to eradicate the bloodline from existence {Contrasting with DIO keeping these feelings to the end while Sayo regrets these feelings and just wanted to be stopped, and to counter my own connection, doesn’t really hate them and her plan of the The Rokkenjima Massacre was more out of a Nihilistic Desperation}

  • Both of their main abilities (The World/Endless Magic) relate deeply to the concept of time (The World being able to Stop Time/Endless Magic being able to revert anything back to its original state, while also being tied to the Quantum State of Schrödinger's Cat, relating to infinite possibilities and scenarios from different timelines)

Story Connections (Chronological Matching)

  • Both were born as regular humans under different names (Dio Brando/Sayo Yasuda (Although, Her birth name is Lion Ushiromiya)) that were born under broken couples (Dio was born out of an Poor Abusive Couple/Beatrice was conceived through Rape & Incest), dealing under a terrible father (Dario Brando/Kinzo Ushiromiya)

  • & Had their mothers die when they were young, partly done to their father’s actions against them (Dario want for alcohol eventually worked his Wife to death/Kinzo hid Beatrice Ushiromiya away from the world for all her life, till Rosa Ushiromiya found & showed her around the island of Rokkenjima which ended up with her falling off a cliff to her death)

  • This wasn't helped due to their living conditions (Dio being born into the Slums of London/Sayo being a servant on Rokkenjima) & the other people around them acting terribly towards them (Dio being frequently abused by his Father and was looked down upon by most of the people around him/Sayo was the lap dog of the servants of Rokkenjima) but both aspired for greater things in life, relating to the afterlife in some way (Dio wanting to go to Heaven due to his Mother implanting the idea in his head/Sayo wanting to grow into a wonderful person, seeing her struggles as a Test from God)

  • Eventually however, this changed when they were actually given a full on chance in life as their abusers' time seem to pass (Dio killing Dario due to him selling one of his mother’s dresses, causing him to be adopted by the Joestars/The other servants of Rokkenjima leaving, making Sayo one of the most educated servants)

  • However, even still they were looked down upon (Dio felt like the Joestars adopting him was only out of pity, even if Jonathan was open to him/Sayo was still being disrespected by the new servants because they were told not to listen to her by the former servants) {Contrasting with Dio just believing things to be this way, possibly due to his upbringing while Sayo was actually being disrespected} but then decided to take a further action to get some respect on their name, albeit one took it much further than the other (Dio deciding to enact a plan to wear down Jonathan's spirit through psychological torment, to take the Joestar Future for himself/Sayo played pranks on the new servants, claiming that the behaviour was the result of being possessed by The Golden Witch from Legend, in hopes that they would begin to take her seriously)

  • But again in contrast, Dio’s plan didn’t really work due to Jonathan's Mental Fortitude with him then deciding to become “friends” with Jonathan while The Servants eventually started to question if The Golden Witch was real and took Sayo seriously from that point onward

  • Speaking of, during this time, they had met one person who would later become their full on obsession later on in life (Jonathan Joestar/Battler Ushiromiya), with them being good friends for many years {Albeit, Dio & Jonathan didn't really trust each other deep down}

  • Jonathan & Battler are both Protagonists that were born into extremely rich families that despite their upbringing, are extremely compassionate emotional (albeit Battler is a lot more so in this case) & unstoppable resolves with them being a bit of their depth at the beginning of the story before growing in mature & serious heroes who fight against supernatural forces (Vampires/Witches) in order to get a happy ending & to take down Dio/Beatrice. Both were also based off other Japanese pop culture characters (Kenshiro/Phoenix Wright)

  • You could also compare Battler to Jotaro, with how their families & lives had been ravaged by Beatrice/DIO and how they were the ones to finally “end” them. Also contrasting with how Battler was very emotional but became more serious over the story while Jotaro was extremely closed off but learned to become more open through the events of Stardust Crusaders, Diamond is Unbreakable & Stone Ocean. Also, both were voiced by Daisuke Ono

  • However, this friendship fell apart years later due to the complete opposite reasons {Jonathan found out something he shouldn’t (on Dio’s End) about how Dio was poisoning his father, George Joestar/Battler forgetting something he should’ve remembered, his promise to marry Sayo} which would fully set the stage for most of the other actions within the series

  • While both tried to keep their cool, both are heavily rattled by this event (Dio being extremely anxious if his plan would work at all/Sayo being completely devastated by Battler forgetting his promise) which then later led them to discover secrets that were tied to not only them, but the whole family (Dio planning to Kill Jonathan with the Stone Mask, which Dario found while looting George’s body but then finding out that it could create vampires/Sayo figuring out the Witch's epitaph, which later on was used as a detailed account of how to perform the ritual to revive Beatrice, and found the location of Kinzo's gold, which was originally thought to be given to him by Beatrice for exchange for his soul)

  • However, this is when about this time where both were transformed into supernatural creatures (Vampire/Witch) because of the action of another series villain who happened to be MUCH more powerful (Kars, who was the true creator of the Stone Mask/Lambdadelta, who found the design of Beatrice's Game Board amusing) {With Kars not even knowing of Dio’s Existence, while Lambdadelta used Beatrice just to trap Bernkastel in her game)

  • Kars & Lambdadelta are both incredibly ruthless. sadistic and cruel antagonists (even more so than Dio or Beactrice) who take great joy out of the suffering of others and get bored very quickly. While also having a very one track mind, mainly focusing on acquiring one thing (The Red Stone of Aja/Bernkastel) and took over as main antag when Dio & Beatrice "died" the first time. You could also compare Lambdadelta’s later actions to Kars from Jorge Joestar, with them actually being a lot more level headed and willing to fight on the side of good against plot manipulating threats (Jorge Joestar Dio Brando/Featherine Augustus Aurora). Also both are related to the authors previous works (Kris's Arm Blades being based one of the abilities of Boah from Baoh the Visitor/Lambdadelta being heavily tied to Satoko Houjou from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)

  • This then caused them to commit an absolute slaughter (The Burning Down of the Joestar Mansion/The Rokkenjima Massacre) where then the whole series pretty much kicks off and the fate of an entire Bloodline

  • Throughout the First Part of the story, Jonathan & Battler are always lagging behind Dio & Beatrice, with them being extremely tauntful all the way. They both begin to use proxies to carry out murders just to help themselves (Dio's Zombies/The Goat Butlers & the Seven Stakes of Purgatory) with them gaining and showing off new powers across the story (Such as Dio’s Flash Freezing & The Red Truth), however they still keep pushing onwards

  • But then, eventually at the end of the first act of the story, Jonathan & Battler manage to get the upper hand on them and seemingly kill them (With Dio this happens twice, firstly on Windknight’s Lot with Jonathan’s Fire Punch destroying his Body & secondly on the Boat, where both Him & Jonathan seemingly die in a Ship Explosion/In their final debate, Beatrice becomes impaled on a massive stake, unable to destroy Battler's blue truths)

  • However, they show a good bit of character development and further deepen their relationship with the main character that gets expanded on later in the story (Dio talking about how he respects Jonathan as a Person & their fates are deeply intertwined/Beatrice keeps alluding to Battler’s Sin that caused the The Rokkenjima Massacre and tells Battler before she dies to answer her riddle: "who am I?")

  • Then they stay hidden for good bit of the story, as they aren’t really fully alive (DIO being at the bottom of the ocean for a Hundred Years after the ship explosion/Beatrice being rendered comatose, having used up all of her spirit in fighting Battler) but with them massively still affecting the bloodlines after their deaths (Joseph not having a Father Figure, Erina not having a husband, George Joestar the Second being killed by a Vampire, Lisa Lisa losing her husband/Battler spending the entirety of End of the Golden Witch & Most of Dawn of the Golden Witch trying to find a way to peacefully kill Beatrice)

  • Eventually, after a good but of them not being there, they are brought back to life (DIO being found at the bottom of the Ocean by Sailors and brought back onto land/Chick Beatrice & Beatrice The Elder fusing together to become Beatrice once again) where they become alot more reflective and calm.

  • They also help out someone who become their closest ally with their troubles (DIO healing Enrico Pucci, who was struggling to cope after he had his sister killed & brother/Beatrice teaming up with Battler to defeat Erika, where he was stuck in a Logic Error before she showed up) with them becoming alot closer afterwards (Pucci becoming DIO’s only true friend/Beatrice & Battler getting married)

  • Both then one last final action against the whole bloodline they were fighting against throughout the story (DIO’s Final Battle with The Stardust Crusaders in Egypt/Beatrice attempting to bring about the Rokkenjima massacre in the Tea Party) where they are finally put down (Jotaro shattering The World, which in turn Shatters DIO/Beatrice, after surrendering, being shot by Kyrie) {Contrasting with The Crusaders working together to end DIO’s Reign while the Parents at Rokkenjima killed each other due to their own inability to work with one another)

  • Both were still alive (Well, DIO wasn't alive, they just wanted to be sure) but finally died for real this time with the main characters standing around them & dying along side the person who they obsessed over so much (DIO’s body (along with Jonathan’s) being burned by the Sunlight/Beatrice drowning herself at the bottom of the Ocean after realizing she wouldn’t be accepted by society any longer, with Battler jumping in and going down with her)...but still kinda live on in Afterlives (There’s an Afterlife in Jojo, meaning that DIO went there at some point/Beatrice & Battler being transported to the Meta World, where Beatrice tried to make Battler remember who he was after he forgot everything), bringing their stories, to an end.

Story Connections (Not Chronological Matching)

  • Both are the main cause for most of the main villains showing up through the very long story, pretty much being “the person who everything kinda revolves around” (Speedwagon investigating Santana’s Cave due to the Amount of Stone Masks there, DIO’s Servant Enya finding the Stand Arrows from Diavolo (who later came out of hiding after DIO’s son, Giorno & The Rest of Passione protected Trish), those same Stand Arrows giving Kira Killer Queen. Pucci mainly doing the Heaven Plan for the sake of DIO/Bernkastel coming to Beatrice's game to be a sponsor, Lambdadelta arriving to Beatrice's Game to capture Bernkastel, Eva-Beatrice getting her power from Beatrice, Featherine mainly writing about the Rokkenjima massacre, ect)

  • Both Wrote Long Pieces of Literature that were later found by other characters, relating to their own lives (DIO’s Diary/The Message Bottles)

  • Both made themselves look like good guys for a bit just to go “Sike, I’m still evil!” (Dio turning himself into the Police, only to put on the Stone Mask & become a vampire right afterwards/Beatrice coming to help Battler stop EVA-Beatrice, only to reveal that she was manipulating the situation all along)

  • There was a good bit of the story where the main characters tried figure out their abilities and how they did what they did (Joseph trying to figure out DIO’s Stand Ability/Battler trying to figure out how Beatrice committed the Rokkenjima Massacre without her being a Witch)

  • Both Changed their Names to One Word ones (Dio Brando to DIO/Sayo Yasuda to Beatrice)

  • One of the main protagonists were first introduced to them through an image of them (Jotaro first seeing DIO through the Spirit Photo Hermit Purple Made/Battler seeing Beactrice's Portrait in the Rokkenjima Mansion)

  • Both have numbered groups of followers that do every command they do (The Egypt 9 Glory Gods/The Seven Stakes of Purgatory) that are based off Religion/Mythology (The Gods from Egyptian mythology/Binsfeld's classification of demons)

  • Both have a servant who has undying loyalty towards them, willing to sacrifice themselves so they can survive (Vanilla Ice/Ronove) {A Contrast could be made with Ice getting extremely pissed whenever anyone insults DIO while Ronove loves to have a poke at Beatrice from time to time)

  • Both fully fucked with someone who was mainly out for revenge against the person they lost their sibling to (Jean Pierre Polnareff, who was looking for J. Geil after he raped & killed Sherry Polnareff, who DIO then mind controlled with his Fleshbud /Ange Ushiromiya, who went back in time to save Battler, find the truth of the Rokkenjima massacre & Kill Beatrice, which Beatrice just made it so she couldn’t reveal her identity to Battler overwise she’d be destroyed)

  • Both had someone follow their words to ascend (Enrico Pucci, who followed the Heaven Plan to eventually obtain Made in Heaven/EVA-Beatrice, who after solving the witch's epitaph was giving the Full Power of Beatrice) who began to mess with reality {Contrasting with Pucci using Made in Heaven to Reset the Universe, so he could make everyone happier & understand their own fate while EVA-Beatrice fucked with reality, killing people over and over again for her own amusement)

  • Pucci’s Following of the Heaven Plan could also connect to how Battler tried to figure out his own sin towards Beatrice, with the two going through methodical steps to figure out the truth before reaching it for someone who they cared about (Pucci trying to reach DIO’s World & achieving Heaven/Battler trying to find out what his Sin is & letting Beatrice rest)

  • During one of the times they were dead, they were kinda reborn into more innocent forms (The Green Baby/Chick Beatrice & Beatrice The Elder) by Pucci & Battler who wanted to do by them right, following their words

  • Both have alternate universe counterparts (Diego Brando/Lion Ushiromiya) who were almost killed at birth (Diego being almost drowned by his Father/Lion being involved in the Cliff Incident)

  • Both of their series all start because of a fucking cliff (Geroge Joestar’s Carriage falling off a cliff, causing Dario to find & loot what he thought to be a corpse, with George thinking that Dario was there to save him and letting Dio stay him after Dario’s death/Kinzo, due to his sin, having him & Genji offer Sayo to Natsuhi, who in her anger & distress, threw her off a cliff with her also falling off, causing the domino effect leading to Sayo becoming Beatrice)

  • Both kinda die & die within the series, One of the times involving them turning into dust (DIO being burned by the Sun after his fight with Jotaro/Beatrice letting herself die after losing faith in Battler) & where they sent to the bottom of the ocean and the person they obsessed over held them in their arms (Dio being held on the Ship by Jonathan as it below up, where he then escaped into the coffin where he was then trapped at the bottom of the ocean/Beatrice jumping off the boat, weighing herself down with a piece of gold where battler then went down and hugged her as they both drowned)

Story Connections (Non-Canonical Material)

  • Both have their own Dimension that they fight the Main Characters in (The Over Heaven Arena/Beatrice's Game Board)

  • Both have the power to manipulate reality itself using abstract abilities (The World Over Heaven being able to Rewrite Reality & Fate/The Red, Blue & Gold Truth being able to make an Undeniable Truth, Advance the Users Over all Theory & Truth that is constructed on Belief)

  • Both also have the ability to manipulate the Plot (DIO becoming the Antagonist of the Novel Jorge Joestar, meaning that the plot bends to his own will/Beatrice as the Game Master being able to manipulate countless fragments to piece together her own plotline)

  • Both are treated like legends & bogey men to the entire bloodline, which one of the main characters (Joji/Battler) didn't believe till they saw them

  • Both fought against one of the people who were directly tied to them getting their powers in spectacular fashion (Kars/Virgilia) who were troubled by their actions(Kars wondering why Dio would want to conquer the world and told him to not rush to death/Virgilia wanted to take back her powers and title because of Beatrice's mishandling of the Endless Magic)

  • For both it's Sudo-Implied that they won't ever get a happy ending (Jotaro always adapting to DIO's Abilities and Overcoming them/Sayo never being happy in any timeline)

Meta Connections

  • Both are the first & most famous main villains of some of the most beloved stories in their respective genres, which is funny because even with their overwhelming presence, they’re actually pretty weak compared to later villains

  • Both series are know for lavish outfits, absurd abilities, parallels to religion & pop culture, batshit insane & confusing plots that some how also manage to be Peak Fiction, fights mainly being based off strategy, intelligence & bullshit and characters repeating the same words over and over again

  • Both’s stories are heavily inspired by one piece of media (Holy Diver by DIO/The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighier)

  • Both’s name have different meaning in italian (DIO meaning “God”/Sayo meaning Beautiful & Beato meaning "blessed")

  • Both had their desgines shaped by other pieces of Media (Dio by the character Roy Batty from Blade Runner/Beatrice's Outfit is inspired by one seen in the Gothic & Lolita Bible Issue 18)

  • The Fandom has theories of them both being Bisexual (which is implied in the series itself)

  • Both have a song associated to them called “End of the World”

  • A Fun One: DIO directly inspired Sakuya Iyazoi from Touhou Project, which is a Series which Umineko references with Jessica wearing the outfit of Marsa Kirisame
