ok, so this is like my third Shakespeare pairing...I think Shylock is probably the most compelling, underrated, "screwed-over" characters ever (as far as Shakespeare) Yeah he asked for a pound of flesh but the man is justifiably pissed off! He gets spit on in the streets just because he's Jewish, his daughter elopes and sells her mother's ring for a monkey, Antonio can't pay his debt, its a justifiable breaking point and in the end he literally loses everything including his identity!
He's not as interesting as Robin Goodfellow but I still think he would be more interesting as a young man then Romeo! I certainly would like to see what started the feud between him and Antonio, I like to think that it was due to a wealthy cousin that Antonio was courting named Mary who came to start a courtship at age 15 and Shylock though being a few years younger and a Jew is better able to charm Mary with his boyish crush of watching her from a far as opposed to Antonio's boldness, and it just progresses from there over the course of a lot of summers until Mary is forced to break off her forbidden romance with Shylock and marries an Earl, Antonio starts fawning over Bassino and after many bitter years of trying to get over his love affair with Mary, Shylock agrees to be matched with Leah who is pregnant by the rape of another man to protect her honor and she gives him a ring in gratitude (Antonio is actually Jessica's real father) but Shylock adopts Jessica as his own, Shylock and Mary meet back up once again after years when Jessica is 3 and Mary and her husband are in Venice on business; After much resistance Shylock and Mary finally have a steamy one night stand, Leah finds out and falls ill of heartache, Mary helps tend to her, Leah dies, they blame themselves blah blah blah, they break up again, he becomes more bitter and all the other tropes that would make a dramatic, young adult romance novel... and I'd like to think Mary and Shylock would meet again after the trial when he is broken, she returns him the ring Leah gave him and they pick up where they left off...
but that's just me Maybe someday....
