A free write I made about last weekend (April 23 - 25) as another 'Sort my thoughts and insanity' thingy; with a few add-ons to benefit it as a Deviant Art pic.

-The Blood of the Hydra-

On the world of Auriga, the Hydraeic were a modestly prosperous and aloof people, habitually living by large bodies of water or else fertile forests and swamps for the stable food these provide. With their affinity for water they discovered that the supernatural 'Dust' flow through their streams. Naturally a philosophical sort, the Hydraeic discovered for themselves the 'magical' properties of Dust and quickly began learning their own techniques, along with its relationship with water (Aquapulvistics - starting tech).

Unlike the Ardent Mages, the Hydraeic did not tap into the potential of Dust through pain rituals, but instead through their tradition of Alchemy (Arcana of Matter - starting tech) and a sixth sense unique to themselves yet similar to the blindsight of the Eyeless Ones. However such a clinical, arguably less committed, methodology means that sorcerers of the Hydraeic will never have the arcane power potential of the (in)famous Ardent Mages (Dust Purifier + Dust Mechanics - technology options; NO Painosphere + Sacrificial Amplifiers). There was one anomaly however, quantities of Dust that have been hoarded or used by the Hydraeic for prolonged periods of time have transmogrified to a silvery and more viscous form of the material - as though it was now Quicksilver. This 'Silver Dust' is part of the mystery as to how the Hydraeic are mages, as the unique material can serve as a medium between a Hydraeic Alchemist-Sorcerer and more commonplace gold Dust.

With the financial capital of their Dust, the Hydraeic expanded their industry, searching out Glassteel to build their cities and fuel their ever ambitious projects and experiments of their Alchemists and Artificers (Holy Resource - Glassteel). But this prosperous 'Silver Age' was not to last - for the instabilities of Auriga, similar to the disasters faced by the Vaulters, caused the caves and karsts that the Hydraeic cities snaked through to collapse and shatter. This left many Hydraeic citizens to be killed or left homeless, the great vaults of Dust the great cities kept were never stocked to capacity and what little Dust that was available was used to magically endure the catastrophe and rescue survivors. What the vaults did contain in more abundance where the Glassteel, essential for the accumulation of Dust and the construction of the prized Hydraeic industry and infrastructure (Dust Starved + Glassteel Legacy - racial traits).

Now a new age has begun for the ambitious and stubborn Hydraeic, old tomes has been rediscovered from salvaging of their ruined cites, the old question of their origins on Auriga has been reignited. An old monument or automaton has been found, impossibly ancient yet intact and new-like. It harnesses great power over Dust and even gravity, even its dormant state. From it the theory for teleportation was formulated. The revival of this ancestral and primeval artifact holds many answers for the Hydraeic in these challenging and unknown times.
