Chapter 9
Nate got Annie on the mattress, which she hadn’t noticed was different to her own until that evening. She had been a little distracted by the discovery of her new condition and hadn’t realised it was remote controlled to raise and lower her if needed. She like this, though she couldn’t get her hands to work the controls as they were at present. Nate got her T-shirt, shorts and bra removed before checking the diaper. It was clean, so he told her it could stay til morning. He took her leg bag away to empty again and then got her dressed for bed. Satisfied that she was comfortable, he had her on her side, propped with pillows, explaining that he would turn her in a few hours so she wouldn’t be in the same place all night. He woke at three a.m. to turn her onto the opposite side and they drifted back off to sleep again soon after.
At seven the next morning, Annie woke to the sensation of Nate kissing the back of her neck and stroking her shoulder. She shivered, though not from cold, from the delicate flutter of touches across the sensitive part of her body. Nate nuzzled the back of her neck and drew circles with his fingers across her upper arms. She was feeling so relaxed and dreamy, it was untrue.
Annie glanced down at her body, which had remained inert since he had moved her in the middle of the night. She couldn’t see beyond her hips as the sheets prevented it, but she saw her left arm lying across her ribs, fingers curled as they had been since yesterday morning. Her right arm was lying on the mattress at a strange angle where it had fallen. Nate spoke sweet nothings in her ear and again she felt the shiver run up the back of her neck. She turned her head to meet his lips and felt a surge of emotion as they kissed.
“Can you turn me over on my back, love?” She asked quietly.
He gently supported her head as he pulled her towards him. Her left arm sank to the mattress and her legs were lying crossed under the sheets. He pulled the sheets down off her legs and carefully lifted the left off the right and lay it alongside instead. Stroking her face and neck, he leaned over for another kiss, this time full on, tongues swirled around each other. They shared their passion for each other this way for some time. Nate gradually worked the kisses across all the skin she could feel and sometimes to the parts she couldn’t. He sucked and caressed her nipples, even though she couldn’t sense his touch. She watched everything he did, continuing to raise her arousal. It didn’t bring her to climax, but she was thrilled at his touches and she felt about as sensual as she ever had. Finally after an hour of touching, caressing and kissing, Nate removed her diaper and entered her. She did not feel anything directly, but between watching and feeling the vibration of his motions through the mattress and the parts of her body which could feel, she felt an emotional bubble burst as he shuddered, grimaced and sighed blissfully at his own moment of gratification.
Their morning routine followed that of the day before, as they spent the morning on the beach again. Annie managed to coax her pale skin into a rosy glow, without burning as she had feared. When she lay on the bed ready for departure shortly after lunch, she cried to herself briefly. Nate was busy in the bathroom, packing away their things. She was crying because she didn’t want to leave. She wanted to stay longer, maybe even forever. The thought of work the next morning, of returning to ‘normality’ had made her emotions rise to the surface and she felt a little sick at the prospect of giving up the relaxation and peace she was finding in herself.
Nate came back in and realised she was upset. She explained why and he hugged her for a few minutes. He was beginning to see how she would be upset. Taking her and putting her back in the wheelchair for the last time, he wiped her tears. They decided to stay a little while longer. Annie wanted to talk her feelings through with him. She explained how he had made her feel, how she had arrived at a decision about the future. She looked him in the eye and told him she wanted a year to make senior partner, then if she did, she knew she would be financially secure no matter what. If she managed it, she would let him hypnotise her and he could leave her like that permanently.
Nate looked at her for a few moments and tipped his head to one side thoughtfully. “I could do that, but it seems so drastic, aren’t you just enjoying the freedom of doing this occasionally then being able to walk and do normal things the rest of the time?”
“I would have thought so, but how can I explain this and make it sound like a sensible idea?” she paused trying to put her thoughts into words. “If I keep going back to normal life, I will keep putting my work first. Its like I can’t control myself, the urge to push until I get what I want takes over me and I forget about actually living. Its an existence driven by compulsion. When I come away with you, its like the addiction of work is just gone and I feel liberated. I know its ironic in the extreme, but by losing my physical abilities, I also lose that addiction for work and vice versa, when I go back to work tomorrow, it will consume me again. I like myself better, and I enjoy life more, when I’m with you and I can barely move a muscle. It makes no sense but it’s the way I feel.”
He took her hand and lifted it. “Can you really spend the rest of your life with this?” he meant her limp, numb, curled fingers.
“I can. That’s what I’ve learned here. I thought about the other times you hypnotised me and I decided I would forgo feeling in most of my body if you let me keep the little movement I have now. I don’t want to be able to feel everything and move nothing, its too frustrating and although Friday night was interesting, I didn’t like the way people looked at me. But I enjoyed yesterday so much, that little bit of independence, just enough to be able to control the chair on my own, but not enough to function entirely without help, that was just right.”
“I know. When you told Ellen and David, I knew you had made your mind up.” He waited while she nodded. “What’s next then?”
“I suppose we had better have a story for when we’re here, oh and I want a different chair. Next time we come, we are going via the nearest mobility store to order something I can buy for keeps.”
“Okay,” he nodded. “We have plenty of time to sort things out.”
With that he spoke gently to her for a while and she drifted off. Not wanting to end the role play yet, Nate strapped her to the chair securely, knowing when she awoke, she would still be unable to move. As she came round, Annie realised she could now feel her body but she couldn’t move. Nate had her bound to the chair, her arms, legs and chest, so she was going nowhere. He leaned in to kiss her and then they went to leave. As they went out to the van and Nate moved the lift out for her to steer in, their new neighbours came out to wave them off. Annie moved the chair into position in the rear of the van and Nate secured the chair in place. A few moments later, they pulled out into the narrow, sandy road back to their weekday normality.
Annie was sat in her office daydreaming about the weekend at the beach house. She was definitely losing it. Or was she? Was her lack of concentration really as bad as she thought, or was she simply being like everyone else? Certainly from what she knew, every time she went through the office admin pool, she overheard all sorts of gossip, never mind the ladies room. She used to wonder how they ever got any work done at times. Was that why they would go quiet when she entered, she knew she had a reputation for being a workaholic and also a bit feisty. Did they think badly of her because of this? There was only one person who could answer the question, but she couldn’t just come out and ask her secretary, she needed to go about it in a roundabout way.
“Gloria, can you spare me a minute please?” She made an excuse to see her secretary. She always had a letter that needed typing. “I need a letter to Flannery for his libel case.” She was referring to a local journalist who was always getting himself into hot water and thus, a regular client.
Gloria came through to the inner office and brought her notepad ready for the inevitable dictation. “I sometimes wonder if sooner or later Mr Flannery is going to get sued by virtually the whole city, how many times has it been this year?”
“Four already I think,” Gloria raised her eyebrows at the thought. “If he wasn’t so rude about it, maybe they wouldn’t sue.”
“You could be right,” Annie spoke wistfully as Gloria took her seat opposite. They got started with Annie constructing the letter, with some input from Gloria, encouraging her client to cut a deal with the complainant. Gloria looked a little surprised that she didn’t want to contest it, she rarely settled out of court. Realising Gloria’s surprise, she shrugged. “Even I can’t win this one. He picked on the wrong person and admitted as much but is too stubborn to apologise in public.”
“He really was dreadfully rude, I read the article.”
“And he had no evidence to base his accusation on either, I suppose I shouldn’t complain, he is topping my pension up nicely with his regular bills for my services.” They shared a laugh at the loud-mouth client’s expense. “I suppose we shouldn’t gossip though, not very professional is it?”
Gloria smiled, “I don’t know, a little gossip is good for the soul,” she responded.
“Yes but if you live by the sword, you could die by the sword. I hate to think what the admin pool say about me.” It was fishing at its very best, disguised in friendly banter.
Gloria shook her head. “You have no need to worry on that score, but one or two of the other partners might want to be a little worried.”
“Really?” Annie’s interest piqued. “Do tell.”
“Well, I don’t want to say who told me but one of the junior partners is banging his secretary and the other has been seen with a much older lady out on the town.”
Annie knew instantly who Gloria was referring to. “So what do they say about me?”
“Not much, you have a very professional reputation.”
“That doesn’t sound very exciting does it?” Annie thought it made her sound dull.
“Maybe not, but at least you don’t have a bad reputation. If anything they just comment that you work too hard and you’re a bit of a slave-driver.”
Annie breathed a sigh of relief.
“Oh and they think you’ll be the next senior partner when one of the old boys goes, which looking at some of them won’t be too long.”
It wasn’t. As luck had it, at the end of the summer, one of the senior partners decided he’d had enough and that left a space up for grabs. When the decision was made, the candidates were called to a meeting and the result was announced. Annie was the newest senior partner at the firm.
She was ultra-excited by the prospect, but also wanted to tell Nate at a special time, so the following weekend, when they had arranged to take a trip to the beach house, she tried desperately to avoid letting on that she had good news.
Little did Annie know, but Nate also had plans for the weekend. It was an engagement ring stashed in the breast pocket of his jacket, which he too was saving for the weekend. He planned to take her out for a romantic meal and then take her on a stroll along the beach in the moonlight, so that just when the mood was right, he would pop the question and pull out the ring.
They met at his office on Friday night again. They had met every Friday since he had bought the property, travelling to the beach house for the weekend with Annie in what had become her ‘normal’ weekend state of paralysis. Annie knew as she entered the office, Nate would have her wheelchair ready and the trunk of the van would be loaded with their bags and some groceries, as well as the holdall with anything needed to take care of her as a quadriplegic. Annie knew that she would have a fantastic weekend and arrive back in the city relaxed and refreshed, but also in her mind now was approaching Nate with the idea of making this permanent, of making her relax for the rest of her life. She wanted to plan the transition from being a weekend quadriplegic to being permanently paralysed from her shoulders down.
As usual, they chatted about their day first, then ready for what she knew was coming, Annie lay on the couch and waited for the inevitable. Half an hour later, she was stirring from her drowsy state and realised something different had presented itself again. She could only feel the skin on her face and neck. The rest of her body was numb and immobile. She smiled at Nate, who was sat beside her.
“I know that I’ll have to give you back some shoulder movement tomorrow, but for tonight I’ll take complete care of you,” he smiled and brushed her hair behind her ears. “I have a nice surprise too.”
Annie smiled at his excitement. “What is it?”
“Well I got on the phone to a company near the beach house and they sent over a trial wheelchair for you, plus we’ve got an appointment at the showroom tomorrow.”
“Really? Gosh, that’s great. Show me.”
Nate went out of the room briefly and she heard the hum of a motor. Realising that she was going to get to operate her own chair even though she couldn’t move sent a wave of excitement through her veins.
“Nate was operating the motor with an attendant control on the rear of the chair, but already she could see it had a sip and puff control attached. “Wow, it looks fantastic.”
He moved the chair into position alongside the couch. “Wait ‘til you see what it can do,” he explained. Pressing another button, the wheelchair seat started to recline and the leg rests straightened out until the chair looked more like a bed. He carefully reached over and slid Annie across from her recumbent position, into the chair and settled everything in the correct place. Feet and legs in place on the extended pads that made up the rests, arms and hands secured in the trough-like armrests, lateral restraints alongside her ribs and under her armpits, head nestled in the curved headrest. Finally he secured the chest strap and then engaged the motor to move the chair into a seated position. “It can be stopped at any time so when you feel like you are in the right place let me know.”
Annie didn’t feel her body change position, but she could see her body come into view as her head and shoulders were raised and her feet lowered. When she was at a 45-degree angle she asked Nate to stop. “I feel a little dizzy,” she explained.
“Take a moment to collect yourself, you should be okay in a little while.”
She felt the wave of dizziness pass.
“Do you want to stay like this or sit up more?”
“A little more would be good,” she replied. Nate moved her into a more seated but still not upright position when she asked him to stop again. “This is fine, my head is nicely positioned in the rest so I don’t want to be any more forward or I’ll have to support it.”
They had a drink before they left, he had coffee and she had water, which of course he fed her through a feeding bottle. When they were done, Nate proceeded to load both their luggage and then Annie, who had to stay in the wheelchair for the journey, rather than sit in the passenger seat. She had a chance to have a go at steering the chair around the room for a while in practice before heading from his office to the van. She had coped reasonably well, though it required thought before she toggled between directions. There was a small screen attached to the armrest of the chair, which displayed the direction she was using and also had a menu for the other functions of the chair. Once she was familiar with the menu, she would be able to tilt and recline the chair herself as well as steer it. Nate also explained that it could be used to control other things as well through an environmental control system, which she stored for information in her memory.
