Description
Eos, She that steps out first, who awakes the birds and insects, who makes the cock crow and awaken us all. She is the dawn, the leaders of the parade by day. Eos is the morning, the rise before the rise of the day. The daughter of Hyperion and Thiea. And with the dawn, she brings the dews, moistening the grass and flowers, in their morning bath.Eos was the first deity that even I connected with, I first saw her name in a kid's encyclopedia book I had. And luckily for me there was plenty of classic images of Eos to embrace me. I was already pagan and to follow the Hellenic faith (Gods know I studied some many faiths in depth) But walking through northerns Athens one day, there was a terra cotta statue of Eos in a garden and instantly the connection was made. She was soft and sweet, and I swear, that statue practically moved in my mind's eye; smiling at me. Like a sign that I was on the right path. I was only 15 then. I walked by that house every day during that trip. And every trip afterwards when I was in Athens. And every day I left a single flower at the gate to her. Sadly, during a trip back in the late 00's, the statue, for whatever reason, was gone.
So, despite the hundreds of classical images of Eos, I instead used that terracotta statue is reference for this image of Eos. The earrings and bracelet are from other archaeological sources. The colors I gave the dress come from the dawn sky herself. Her dew pitcher comes from a pitcher from a Macedonian museum. (or at least that's where it was, last I saw it) As for the shield, it depicts her two horses. Oh, a word about her wings: While literary and artistic sources always gave her wings, I never saw Eos winged. Well, I do but I don't. I feel compelled to say that it is up to the deity if they wish to bare wings or not. Willed to be, if the call is needed. So, I made her wings transparent. Something I may do to all "winged divine images' in the future.
