Description
(Sorry that it's been a tad since my last post. I was on a short private dig on Andros. I was totally burned out when I got home and needed 2 days recoup time. And I am still feeling its all. That said.......)The Goddess of the home, hearth, ovens, and home lights, lamps and fire. The eldest from the union of Rhea and Khronos. Hestia was also the patron of children, the home in general and towns and cities. One of several gods that even Zeus bowed down to. One of her lesser known attributes at that of a morning goddess; she who opens the doors and windows of the house and waking the family up with food and song. It's sad that there are very little sacred stories of Hestia that survive today. Another lesser attribute for Hestia is "domesticated fire."
So the general pose is from the famous statue of the Roman Vesta. Despite the culture different, it's still a beautiful piece. The colors and designs on her chiton are from two separate pottery. Her necklace is an artifact in the National Museum. Her tripod comes from a Delphian artifact, now in the Delphi museum. The cocks on the back shield come from one of the few existing sacred tales. The general depiction comes from descriptions of Hestia, I made her older than I would make Zeus, as she should be. A motherly look.
