You had since drifted off into an uneasy doze, and your dreams became more confusing and chaotic as they progressed. At first, you were standing at the edge of your apartment roof, and there were swirling black shadows around you.
They gnawed at your consciousness, willing you to give in and give up your will to fight back. To jump...
To jump... To give up...
You wanted to jump... To let go, to fall, and let her have total control...
No. That wasn't going to happen. There was no way you'd let the likes of her get the better of you.
No. No. "No!" You yelled into the shadows. "No!" The dark shapes hissed and spat at the word as though it was something disgusting that the the dog had dragged in. The wind picked up. It whipped the hair out of your eyes, and the something behind you had pushed you... You were falling. You closed your eyes, feeling the cold air rushing past you. Waiting for the impact.
It didn't come. When you opened your eyes, the edges of the dream were somewhat blurred, distorted. Everything was white. There were smoky, inky spirals of some unidentifiable substance. There were whispers in the space around you. A voice that was so like yours, and yet so different...
"I know what you've done, (Name)."
"No..."
"I've seen it. I've seen what happens when you get close to people. I know, (Name). After all, we are so alike..."
"Shutupshutupshutup!"
"(Name).... (Name)!"
I know that voice... Your tormented mind tried to register this, but your head still throbbed from the intrusion. It was hard to think.
"(Name)! Wake up!"
I have to... Wake up!
You jolted up in your bed. Cold sweat rolled between your shoulder blades, and made your vision burn. You looked around wildly, and saw Sally standing next to you. She was frowning.
You stared back warily. "What is it?"
Her frown deepened. "You were having a nightmare."
"How do you know?"
She sighed. "Pretty much everyone here has them. I can hear them crying," She looked away. "Sometimes I have them, too."
"Fair enough." You respond. Swinging your legs out of bed, you look at her. "Is that the only reason you woke me up?"
"No," She said brightly. The sudden change in attitude startled you. "Daddy says that you should come down and meet everyone. You can eat. too."
You looked at her, bewildered. "Why do you say I need to eat?" Sally had started out of the room, and turned back at your question. "Because you're human." She giggled. Then she spun on her heel and skipped down the hallway. You followed in a daze. What did she mean, because you're human? Did that mean they weren't?
Confused, you walked down the staircase to join whoever it was that occupied the rest of the house.
