Description I feel like I've just given birth,LOL,though the gestation period was rather short (two weeks).
Some great new clients in L.A. who run a studio called"Almost Human",that make monsters and other animatronic devices for movies and television commissioned me to make a heavy industrial conference table with "some added attraction",but they also needed it by the 9th for some important meeting...
After frenetic email exchanges,I persuaded them that what they needed was an organic feature to really make this piece memorable. The model was a gray whale vertebrae. The parts for the spine are mostly forged with the trip hammer, and each individual vertebrae slides over a square tube that was rolled to an appropriate arch so that in the end use the "wing sections" of these vertebrae will not obstruct the knees of anyone drawing their chair close up to the table. Remember;"Form Follows Function",so it has to WORK as a conference table first before any aesthetic embellishment is imposed upon the design...They will have a 4' x 9' piece of thick glass on the top. The dorsal sections of the vertebrae are graduated in size so as to form a nearly parallel ridge just beneath the glass.
All welded and forged steel -33"wide by 86"long by 30" high.

Oh for sure people will remember it. And being in the conference room of someone in the film industry is a really good place. It could be a nice 'step ladder' to something very lucrative. Don't be scared of LA its nothing to be scared of. Its just a city a collection of fruits and nuts. You find them everywhere just in greater concentrations in the big city. I can just see some of your creations in a film. And just think of how creative you can be when you are doing film work. I think it would be great fun.

Yes,there is potential there,
Actually my first large scale sculpture went to L.A. and I delivered it.

I had a girlfriend from Bel Air so used to visit with her down there.(1982).
Mostly my fear is just a reference to freeway driving...LOL. I actually get quite entertained by the alternate reality people dwell in down there, which has allot to do with the movie and entertainment business leading everything.

Wow cool fish. Ah the freeway. Actually the LA freeway isn't as bad as some places. The LA drivers are actually more polite than the Phoenix ones I think. You realize the more you avoid it the worse it gets though. Its sort of like a lot of things if you jump in and go for it you get used to it and it isn't as bad as you first thought.

I agree,
It's just sort of psyching myself up to be a bit more aggressive on the road than I have to be up here, that is intimidating.

Agressive might not be the right direction. Defensive is probably a good choice. Certainly not complacent or distracted though. It is easy to fall into a comfort zone when you don't have to deal with the heavy traffic on a regular basis. You should try spending 6 years in OZ for getting totally out of the traffic mode. Geez it was tough getting back in the swing of driving in even a little traffic after 6 years of driving in the outback where your biggest threat is a kangaroo.

Thank you Anne,
Hey I really like your work, especially the fact that you seem to have tried allot of different things.
On one of your shots you mentioned metals class. Are you at an art school or college? I always try to keep track of good metals programs because they're so rare in this country, and i get asked all the time where a good school is that offers it.

thanks! yeah, i just graduated actually from james madison university in virginia... it's a pretty great place. i was really blessed that they had a fantastic jewelry/metals professor (his name is mark rooker if you're interested) that encouraged us to try lots of different techniques. too bad i had to graduate haha

I have to admit... I got as close as I get to letting out a "fanboy squee" when I saw this.

Which in my world amounts to an ominous/excited "Odin's left nut...."

The wife actually came to check on me.

Kudos, again, Sir! You keep topping your last posting.

I'm sure the client will love it.

I'm glad you saw this little brother,
I was thinking of you and a couple other metal mongers as I posted...
At some point you simply have to "seize the day" and give it all you can. We're here for such little time. I've always felt an urgency to express to the absolute max of my capability at any given moment. No matter what anybody may say or think of this thing, they will not soon forget it...
And mark my words, this thing is going to L.A. IN A MONSTER DESIGN STUDIO for Christ's sake. Somebody will see this and search me out for another piece. It's too unique to get lost in the shuffle...
