Description
Influence mapI thought inbetween projects I'm doing, why not try out the newest meme that seems to be floating around.
This will also give you a pretty good idea as to how my art got so screwed up, trying to match wits with these juggernauts of talent.
These are my influences
Others have used numbers, but I don't want to put them in order of significance, because they're alllllll important and continue to influence me to this day.
Sonic comics : The Archie comics version of Sonic the Hedgehog, was the first and only comic book I ever collected. I would scour the grocery stores every week to see if the latest issue had come in. I was always excited to see the new cover art by artist "Patrick Spaziante" and the stories would inspire me to create my own. As I grew older, and was exposed to "Furries" I kind of lost my taste for it
and stopped collecting - but the dynamic way "Spaz" (as he's nickname), would draw the characters will always stay with me.
Garfield : Many of us have seen or read the fat cat's adventures. I LOVED this comic so hard!! ( and still do ) Garfield was hilarious, sarcastic * that's how I learned the meaning of the word sarcastic * and sometimes the adventures he would have would make no sense, but it cracked me up anyway! This is when I started to make humorous comics with my best friend from elementary school. My stuff was actually pretty good, or at least that's what "Mother Goose and Grimm" artist Mike Peters told me when I showed him some years ago after my friend won a political cartoon contest and took me with him. I still have the guys phone number... somewhere LOL
Joodlez Joodlez "jubz as I call her < 3" has been one of the biggest influences. Once of my FAVORITE artists from the very first time I saw her work. It's cute, but it's also cool. Many of us have our favorite artists, but it's on a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL of awesome when you are in direct contact with them, and speak to them on a daily basis. I dare say she's the most influential, as she's helped me and guided me through the years, helping me improve, and giving me honest feed back about anything I do. Her style is very professional looking, but it still has that fresh, unique look to it. You can't go wrong with this style, as it's simple, yet complex + it continues to become more and more dynamic!
Takehito Harada Disgaea is without a doubt my FAVORITE SRPG. the combat systems are SO deep, and it can keep you playing for years honestly.
YOU CANNOT SAY YOU'VE BEATEN DISGAEA UNTIL YOU'VE HIT LV:9999 AND ONE SHOTTED BAAL IN HIS MOST POWERFUL FORM WHERE HE HAS SO MUCH HP, THAT IT RUNS OVER HIS NAME, HOLY SH!T!
And what really makes these games isn't just the rpg element, but the artist. Honestly, artists really make the game, especially for RPGs of all kinds. Because chances are, if you don't like the artwork, you probably won't pick up the game. The Characters must look interesting, and the art style must inspire you. Takehito does that in SPADES! the man is a genius, and his style HUGE influence on the way I draw and color. I have just about every piece of harada's work in the form of hard matte prints, or art books.
Final Fantasy 9 Naturally I love all FF's * except 8, it sucks * - but as far as one that left a pretty big impact on me, it has to be 9 * with 10 and 6 as close seconds*. FF 9 had it all, great story direction, humorous tone where it was called for, and serious tone where it was called for. It has some of the BEST music in the series, the characters have great story development, the story pacing is awesome, the learning system is great ala- FF tactics. And the game itself, was a parody throwback to the Classic FF job system.
This game inspired me to begin creating stories of great detail, plot development, and take a good hard look all around, at what makes a story successful and memorable.
Kirby I LOVE kirby games, ALL OF THEM - srsly.
they're all so fun and simple to play- but provide some challenge later on * my favorite would have to be Kirby 64 *
I love kirby, and have used him, probably the most in smash brothers. The simple chidren's dreams designs * from creator Masahiro Sakurai I believe*. The simple designs, and how different the characters looked, inspired me to start experimenting with monsters, and cute things LOL
Endling This guy ROCKS! His story telling is top notch, and his use of cascading comic styles works perfectly * I had to attempt it myself, and I like it*. And how can you NOT love his character. Lilith and Ree are my favorites, and I think they're long over do for some fanart from me.
Tetsuya Nomura I LOVE KH, and the different character designs he's created * RIKKU!!!!!!! * Nomura inspired me to begin using heavier lines for a time, and he got me seriously thinking about character design, and role. His style is solid, with a hint of graffiti. Looks very stylish and inspirational.
GAINAX THE BEST ANIMATION COMPANY IN JAPAN, PERIOD. these guys are THE BEST when it comes to dynamic angles, realistic movements, hot characters, great experimental anime, and mech/women. THEY CANNOT BE STOPPED. They, by far, are the BIGGEST influence on my animation, and inspiration to do so. After discovering anime, it didn't take me long to find them ( neon genesis eveangelioin ). Then I soon found out that they were also involved with a lot of the other anime that i've watch-- and it sunk it in, that they are THE company in Japan. They worked on stuff like the pokemon movies, the epic battle in the first season of Naruto *everyone has seen the sasuke vs naruto battle- even if you don't watch the series LOL *- Summer wars, Tenchi, ergo proxy- they've helped or did animation for a lot of big titles * check out the Anime News network to see a list of anime they've worked on- the list is huge, and chances are one of your favorites will be on that list.
Ken Akamatsu He is writing and drawing, what is currently one of my FAVORITE manga of all time. It's not perfect, but it hits all of my favorites. You can even tell that Akamatsu is a big RPG fan. I learned quite a bit about different lore and large party dynamics for him. You can learn quite a bit by reading the lexicon, which explains every aspect of magic and lore, and it's origins.
The sonic games These games inspired me in terms of speed, and the types of things that can be done with it. I love the games * the earlier ones anyway * that told a simple story, and gave the characters specific skills taht they had- and nothing else. I loved speed the most * it's probably my favorite stat in any RPG, and I value it most* and in Sonic CD- it has an animated opening, that inspired my very first animated piece in highschool. The piece won Gold Key, at the Governor's Art competition. unfortunately I lost the animation LOL.
Airports/travel I know this one might seem strange, but I get inspired about traveling, different locations, and the ambiance that comes with every type. I love stopping in and seeing the different architecture for airports of different cities. It's why I also care quite a bit about backgrounds and living areas. I like to try and recreate the feeling * and I will be in upcoming projects * and moods that come along with being in different areas, or exploring.
WHEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW* that was it! I hope this helps give a better idea of where I'm coming from with a lot of the things I do and draw. OF COURSE there are lots more inspirations, but if I did them all, I'd be here typing all night.
Thanks for taking a look - feel free to comment or chat about your own inspirations. you can even link me to your own memes, and I'll take a look

you have a large list of Great Shit. congratulations.
but man, you've got a good eye, especially with the mentioning of Sonic CD. if i ever had the chance to make a sonic game, the controls and gameplay would be based almost solely on the opening and ending from Sonic CD. i would f'cking resurrect him w/ a game like that.

Sonic comics were awesome! It's too bad the quality of art and stories shifted. They had great stories, like the Fugitive arc where Sonic was framed for Sally's supposed death. That was so dramatic! And there was the Mecha Madness Special! I have always seen so much potential in the cast that I wished they were included i the Sonic games! Do remmember Sonic the Hedgehog the animated program from the 90s? Good times
Gainax... FLCL is still my favorite anime of all time despite it's short overall length
Kirby. Gameinformer just named him the cutest character in gaming history and i'd have to agree. He is nintendo's megaman but his method seems much more effective haha. I cannot wait for Epic Yarn

I grinned when you mentioned you learned the meaning of the word 'sarcastic' from Garfield, because I used to say that same thing all the time when I was little and people thought it was weird.

Thanks JC for telling me that it was GAINAX that did my favourite episode in Naruto 1st season. It was very obvious that they hired special animators for that battle.
Joodlez, Endling and KH are all big influences of mine too and I'll be including them in my version of the meme when I get around to it. (Actually, you're also a source of inspiration
)

MY FACE WHEN YOUR FAVORITE KIRBY GAME IS 64.
:<
Super star was a superior version if you ask me.
Especially the DS version... with Marx Reborn.
All your selections are quite nice if not a few odd. Garfield is the oddest choice as it has always seemed overly bland to me, character and script wise.
