Trace if you have to. Observe, take in the style and break it down into a system if you have to. Consider every conceivable angle, position of everything, analyze it and attempt to replicate it. I get a bit of a Disney, Lilo 'n Stitch kind of vibe from the face, the body is all you. Envision on the artist's pencil might have moved, strokes made in what order... You're a smart girl, you can do it~

Well this difficult exercise, and you have very oriented style in my opinion.
But I think this is a really good start, cos when I saw the thimbnail I asked myself I asked myseif "is this really your work???". ^^
If you want to make it more different, you should change your shading especially on knees, nose and elbows, and make the dress more "solid" like you did for the hair (I mean not aquarel). Good luck sailor! XP
