dubbed the "Werewolf" unit after the first letter in their experimental development project code W/XP-33-0018, like all experimental units.
The Werewolf unit is the first super soldier and heavy infantry armor model to be codeveloped from start to finish with maximum compatibility in mind. The Antarian science team knew that they could not hope to match the superior technology of the larger nations, nor could they hope to produce large numbers of cutting edge firearms so they decided on the core values of this new project: affordability, reliability and maintainability.
Thus was project W/XP-33-0018 begun with the defining philosophy that if each and every part was based upon existing tech and prioritizing ease of procurement over performance, then maximum performance must be squeezed out through a holistic design approach where every single piece was complimenting or compensating for another piece.
- The power armor used for the Werewolf project started with a reliable and widely produced base, the Mazzer & Lokk Type-3 Python suit. The original cyber-fiber musculature was left almost unchanged with little modified other than extra fiber bundles added to the legs and shoulders, but the skeletal frame was completely redesigned to incorporate retractable climbing/melee blades on the arms and legs, as well as optimizing coverage to save weight whilst not sacrificing protection from the original model.
- The modifications to the volunteers biology were also based upon existing technology. By using a cocktail of gene therapies that had enough existing research to lack negative interactions, they boosted the user's stamina and provide accelerated clotting and tissue healing as well as adding receptors for interfacing with the reflexive implants.
- A small sensory coordination package is also implanted in the base of the subject's skull, aside from bespoke software to interface with the Antarian military data network language, the hardware of the implant is almost entirely untouched, the special chemical cocktail provided by the gene therapies allowing the implant to far exceed its baseline efficiency without any significant increase in cost.
- Lastly the primary service rifle of the Werewolves the "Quicksilver" marksman rifle was actually a previously designed rifle that was mothballed due to being too expensive to become the standard rifle of the infantry corps, BUT it was just cheap enough to be perfect for the Werewolf unit. Only the targeting computer was modified to interface with the suits, and the external casing was re-molded to make it easier to fire one handed by the strength-boosting muscle fibers of the Werewolf units powered suits. It comes standard with an under-slung shotgun for close quarters combat, but this can replace with numerous field attachments available to the infantry divisions.
And so the first of the Werewolf unit of super soldiers was born. This first unit was actually dubbed the "Wendigos" to differentiate them, and the Wendigos service record quickly proved the value of the Werewolf project. Though individually they lacked the raw power of the Juggernaut suits of the Khymeran Empire, or the borderline prescient predictive algorithms of the Novitaran Starborn troopers, the Werewolves made a name all their own as a shining beacon of Antarian ingenuity. It was said that despite their smaller economy, Antares Prime could produce no less than 4 Werewolf troopers for the cost of a single Juggernaut suit, and their wide availability on every front had the unforeseen side effect of making them a powerful morale booster both in civilian circles and amongst the line troops.
