Description I am trying to use my old sketches to get myself back into wanting to do art. It's been a crazy last few months outside of HARPG, but I am here and trying. I have had this sketch laying around for almost two years and the horses in the back have changed many times over that period. Anyways, enjoy!

Holly hid her smile behind her gloved hand, stifling her giggles. Her blue eyes were locked on Brielle coming down the far line on her horse, Winnie. “I thought Madison said she had been riding forever?”, the blonde whispered to Ella.

Ella watched, her head tilted to the side. Winnie cantered smoothly to the oxer at the end of the line. The closer the pair got to the jumps, the more confidence Brielle was losing, and it was apparent to everyone in the arena. The have had issues the entire lesson, not making it through clear even once.

“Brielle, I swear to God. Just stay out of Winnie’s way and let her do it. Don’t come up until she does. Look at the wall straight ahead.” Madison barked as she tapped a crop against the side of her boot impatiently. “One, two, th…wow.”

Brielle got left behind when Winnie took the last jump, bouncing her out of the saddle and almost backwards off her mount. She frantically grabbed for the reins that were slipping through her hands, making Winnie shake her head in protest and confusion. When Winnie came down to a walk, and finally a halt, Brielle fixed herself in the saddle, tears burning her eyes. With a deep breath, she lined up with the other two girls.

When Brielle fell into line, her cheeks burning red with embarrassment, Ella trotted Bliss off. Effortlessly, the teenager picked up a floaty canter and down the line they went. The pair didn’t miss a beat and looked fabulous doing it.

Madison nodded her head in approval as she watched her daughter nail every stride and jump. “Very nice.”  the woman said. “That’s the way to do it . Slow and steady with impulsion and control. Holly, you know he’s going to get excited, keep him steady and consistent from the start.”

As Holly turned the far corner toward the line, Coozie perked his black tipped ears and focused on the fences with excitement. The young stallion was eager, but listened to the seat and hands of his rider. The line was flawless, and Holly was proud of herself and her mount.

“Now, Brielle.” Madison sighed, frustration bubbling from her chest and dripping off her words. “Did you see how she kept him controlled, but also stayed out of his way? Her eyes were up, looking straight ahead and not at the fence. The fence isn’t going anywhere. Look UP and stay out of her way.”

Hot, fresh tears threatened to spill over as Brielle gathered herself. She pushed Winnie into a rolling canter with a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves and really focus. The mare happily did as she ask and the pair turned the corner to the line. Everyone’s eyes were on her and she could feel them burning into her.

First crossrail, fine. One stride, two, three, four and the vertical was fine as well.

Eyes up, shoulders back, heels down, sit back, don’t get too forward. Keep her steady and don’t get in her mouth. The closer the got, the more she panicked.

Three, two, one, JUMP. The pair cleared it and cantered off, Brielle’s heart in her throat and her face tingling, feeling like it was melting off. Pride and fear fought each other in her stomach, but in the end, numbness seemed to win. Despite doing it and doing it pretty well, she felt no pride. She was just ready to be done.

“See, that wasn’t so difficult, was it? I cannot wait for Lucas to get back to take her over. I’m tired of teaching her.” Madison said. Though the last sentence was not meant for Brielle to hear, she heard it along with the giggled and remarks back from the two other girls before the rode off together, leaving Brielle alone. It wasn’t long before it was just her and Winnie again, as usual. Her heartached with the familiar feeling of loneliness and rejection.

All horses and humans belong to me.
Art belongs to me.
