Description
In some fall coniferous forest in Oregon, a mixed group of small birds lie warily on the branches of a tree. From their stance, you may assume the flock senses some buteo, or accipitrid. However, there is a different threat aloft in this forest.Suddenly, it attacks. On rapid wingbeats, it descends unto the flock, now taking flight to avoid the predator. However, the timing was a mere fraction too late. On the forest floor beneath the tree, lies a woodpecker, pinned to the ground by a robin-sized owl.
While not as charismatic as the vicious Great Horned Owl, or the beautiful Great Gray Owl, any smart small western bird knows that the Northern Pygmy Owl is not to be underestimated. It strikes from tall trees, bearing down on small birds and mice with it's weight. To add onto the fierceness of this little owl, it hunts in broad daylight. Though, this is likely to avoid running into larger owl species by night, many of which would have no qualms with making a meal out of a pygmy owl.
