-Rex Riders-original cover
"The ideal archetype of a cowboy has to be: handsome, determined, proud and confident... and of a few words. This is the "model" of the protagonist that I immortalized on his amazing novel's cover. An intriguing scene, in which the symbiosis of western style and prehistoric world creates a fascinating and contrasting effect, very iconoclastic for the American culture. I wanted a very alive and dynamic image, the same way western culture is much alive in the hearts of Americans, while the interest for dinosaurs is increasing day after day with the evolution of paleontology which continues to fascinate a wider number of enthusiastic and passionate people.
The cow-boy, in a plastic pose, rides his T. rex with great style while catching with confidence a small pounding Triceratops. All drawn on different planes, from the birds (also dinosaurs) fleeing, from the Triceratops in the foreground to the T. rex's head, to the the cowboy in the middle and to the tail of the beautiful beast fading out of focus in the background and the clouds: all this creates a perspective effect that increases the strong dynamism. In addition, a slightly tilted plane (the ground) increases the composition's instability multiplying the dynamism. The exaggerated size of some details, such as the gun, the belt, the brim of the hat and the cowboy's extreme physicality (as for the beasts as well), give the image a strong and pleasing image of masculinity.
The illustration is created in white and black, using a HB pencil (micromina 0.3), with extreme attention to details. It's an image I feel really attached to which I'm very proud of, like the cowboy is proud of his actions. The novel's cover has a strong affective meaning to me because of the author, John, one of my friends overseas which I feel very connected to. I'll never stop to be grateful for the opportunities he gave me (and continues to give me) to work with him and appreciate the American culture, which I find very interesting, through Hollywood and the Paleontology, a field in I work as Paleo-Artist with connections in Nord e Sud America, combining everything with my Italian culture, image creation skills, style and passions."
