The young unicorn scientist, Palette Painter, was showing Rarity his Polymorph potions. She was interested in the application of transformation spells to help her design outfits for non-ponies, since griffon and dragon models weren't always easy to come by in Equestria. She wasn't experienced in this area of magic though, and sought the guidance of a specialist. Pal provided her with his potions, as they eased the burden of trying to shapeshift through spells alone, as well as enable non-unicorns a way to practice the art themselves. A Polymorph potion could be used on one's self or on others.

Pal had demonstrated the potions' effects by changing into different species, finally settling on a diamond dog, a form that he enjoyed as much as his original unicorn one. Pal then had Rarity take a swig of a potion that he had prepared for her, taking one himself with the intent of guiding her through the process. Rarity's horn lit up as she focused, trying as she might on reshaping herself into a diamond dog as Pal had done.

"Come on Rarity," she said through gritting her teeth, straining to get the transformation to start, "we need to get this!"

"Uh..." Pal's eyelids almost reached the back of his head, "...you're overdoing it a bit...um..."

Panic welled up inside Rarity as she began to grow, Oh no, I'm messing up! I need to undo this! She thought of herself and Palette returning to normal, but that only caused the growing to accelerate.

"Rarity, cut off your magic befor—" The room grew slightly bigger around Pal, his tail was curling up and turning into a familiar shade of violet.

Rarity cut off her supply of magic, but the changes continued for the both of them.

"Mr. Painter, I stopped the spell, why are we still changing?"

"The potions were designed for beginners, with a fail-safe to continue morphing the user once the pumped-in magic reached a certain threshold to prevent them from getting stuck between forms." Palette coughed a little and he felt his throat tingling while he spoke, "we just to have ride out the transformation until it's done."

"Darling, am I turning into...you?" Rarity was looking at her hoof dividing into several digits. She too coughed as she felt a similar tingling sensation.

"Looks like it...so I'm definitely turning into you then". The pitch of his voice was a little higher. A stubby horn looking like nothing more than a blemish on his forehead was growing.

"Can't you fix thi—" Rarity sounded like she was trying to do a poor imitation of a male in the gruffest voice she could muster, "...oh my..."

"I'm going to have to make some new potions," Pal coughed again, his voice reached a falsetto as this point, "but it's going to take a while, and I don't think I can use my magic, because I'm turning into you, and I'm going to have your horn, and your magic, which is not suited for transformation spells. We're just going to have to deal with being each other for a little while."

"Well...alright. In the mean time, you don't mind me using your body to try out my designs on?" Rarity could feel her teeth getting sharper.

"Not at all, I'm one of the odd ponies that likes to regularly wear clothes and dress up."

"Wonderful! I'm so glad I found you out of all ponies! Now could you do me a favor?"

"What's that?"

"Don't mess up my hair."

Pal saw a violet curl cascading down the side of his face.
