Description James fell to the ground, resting on his knees and hands and desperately clawing at the floor, as if trying to grab hold of something that wasn’t there. His back arched upwards sharply as he bared his teeth, letting out a pained yelp.

Black fog surrounded him, accentuating the deep red glow that now shone from the stones that were embedded in the brooch that held his cape together. His skin seemed to pale as the veins in his face darkened, turning almost ink black.

“Thomas!” Samira shouted. “What’s happening to him?”

It was as though Thomas was wearing thick earmuffs – between James’s screams and the pounding of his own heart, he couldn’t hear much of anything. The pain James was going through – thanks to his abilities as a Guardian, he could feel them too.

Then, it all stopped. James stopped screaming, and the pain stopped, too. In fact, it felt as though Thomas’s connection to James was severed altogether – he could feel the fear of his friends, but nothing when he looked at James.

The boy rose from the ground, his eyes closed, instinctively reaching for his sword – its blade had lost its glow and turned jet black, beginning to emit dark smoke the moment James’s fingers curled around the handle.

“James,” the Master spoke; James responded by opening his eyes. His pupils had disappeared into his irises, which were barely distinguishable from the glowing red colour his sclera had adopted. James was gone.

The boy bared his teeth menacingly as Thomas drew his sword. He knew what was coming next – there was no avoiding it.

“Destroy them,” the Master ordered. “Give it everything you’ve got.”

I've been rewriting the Guardian Trilogy again as of late, and this is still one of my favourite scenes. Still sends a chill up my own spine, heh.
