Personality:
Ambitious | Self-righteous | Shrewd | Cynical | Resourceful
A man with lofty ambitions and sharp eyes. Anything that distracts from his goals is considered either an obstacle or a nuisance. Conversation with Gilivray is mostly dominated by his own opinions, though he is diplomatic enough to let you speak, as long as you don't take up too much of his time. His self-assurance can come off as arrogant and a bit vain; however, he is keenly aware of his own limitations, and will not engage in a task that exceeds his capabilities unless it is truly unavoidable. Self-preservation has been deeply engrained into his being, with life experiences that have equipped him with a cunning that has allowed him to make it this far.
While seemingly materialistic, he cares little for personal items of luxury, and in fact, rather despises the overt displays of wealth commonly flaunted by the rich. His fixation on acquiring wealth stems from a deeper desire for the power to implement change. While exceedingly scarce in his displays of affection, at heart, he is someone who hates injustice and seeks to protect that which is noble.
History:
Born the young master of a noble mage family in Lealia, as a boy, Gilivray enjoyed the extravagances afforded by his station. Though the Trevante family had, in generations past, been commended for its military prowess, more recent generations had fallen into the easy and profitable allure of merchanthood. Gilivray's father, its latest head, continued this trend, focusing on instructing his son in the more important language of society -- money. Consequently, Gilivray's early years consisted of lessons in financial stewardship, along with the usual magic tutelage.
The sanguine bubble of Gilivray's youth abruptly burst when the Trevante family faced sudden and irrevocable public disgrace, after currying the displeasure of an estate with close ties to the ruler of Lealia. Seemingly in the twinkling of an eye, the family's prior favor turned to scalding humiliation. The master and mistress were so stricken by the change that they fell to illness -- ... an illness of the mind, to be more precise. The wife passed first, by a sheet looped through a crystal chandelier, wound once around her neck. Several weeks later, her husband followed, after departing on an unaccompanied hunting trip into the jungle, never to return.
Now parentless, Gilivray passed his adolescent years in simmering resentment as the heir to a now fortuneless household - bolstered only by the company of a few loyal servants who remained by his side. As soon as he neared adulthood, Gilivray abandoned Laelia, casting aside his former identity to venture to a place where he could fashion his own fate; all the while, carrying the silent oath to one day return and repay those who had remained faithful to the Trevante household even in its darkest days of shame.
It was in Dreto that the lessons imparted by his father came to be of great use. Quick to establish himself in a culture that spoke in the tongue of gold coin - a language he was intimately familiar with - Gilivray was eager to climb the social ladder. Money was what determined one's fate. Money was what gave one power. And if he had more money, he would have more power -- the power to shape the vile system that had displaced and scorned him in the first place. And he was well on his way to achieving that goal..... until that blasted curse mark showed up.
It was a stroke of bad luck, along with the petty grudges he'd accrued from his business enterprises (in the world of capitalism, one's success almost always came at the cost of another's), that landed him in his current predicament. A sweltering day and his own carelessness exposed the cursed insignia, and his fair-weather 'friends' were all too eager to exploit the slip-up. There was no courtesy except a loud banging on his door before a pair of heavy cuffs was thrown around his wrists.
No stranger to public humiliation, Gilivray now finds himself in Raehn....ready to claw his way back up to the top.
Miscellaneous:
- Absconded from Laelia to Dreto at the age of 18; there he chose a new surname (based on the works of a philosopher whom he favored)
- Curse mark is located on his left pectoralis and is...usually not visible unless he is feeling very daring for the day and decides to wear a plunging V-neck without an undershirt
- Very much tormeted by the fact that he is human and has to do inconvenient human things like sleep and eat and use the bathroom.... so he does all of these infrequently
